General Weather Overview

The climate in Nanded, India, is characterized as tropical, with distinct periods of heat and a rainy season. High temperatures prevail throughout the year, but several climatic phases can be distinguished. The city experiences a hot and dry summer, followed by a monsoon period bringing relief from the heat, and a milder, dry winter.

The hottest months are April and May, when the average maximum temperature can reach 39-40°C, and rainfall is practically non-existent. From June to September, the monsoon season begins in Nanded. During this period, temperatures drop slightly, but rainfall and the number of rainy days increase significantly, especially in July, which sees the highest rainfall (averaging 12 mm) and counts about 25 rainy days. From October to February, drier and relatively cooler weather sets in, especially in December and January, when minimum temperatures can drop to 17°C, while daily highs stay at a comfortable level around 29°C.

Thus, travellers should expect hot weather in Nanded for most of the year. If you prefer more moderate temperatures and dryness, the best time to visit is from November to February. For those who do not fear the heat, March to May are suitable, but one should be prepared for high temperatures. The monsoon season from June to September offers fresher weather, but with frequent rains.

Temperature

The climate in Nanded is characterized by significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The hottest month is May, when the average temperature reaches 34.4°C, and maximum values can rise to 40.3°C. It is followed by April and March with very high daytime temperatures, often exceeding 36°C, and in April even 39°C. Even nights in these months remain warm, with minimum temperatures above 26°C in April and 28.5°C in May. The summer period, in general, is distinguished by intense heat and high humidity, especially before the onset of the monsoon season in June.

The winter months, from December to February, bring significant relief from the heat. The coolest months are considered to be December and January, with an average temperature of around 23.3°C - 23.4°C. Daytime temperatures during this period are usually comfortable, around 29°C, and nights can be quite cool, with minimum values around 17.2°C - 17.5°C. February already foreshadows warming but remains pleasant. Transitional seasons, such as October and November, are also characterized by warm weather, but without the extreme heat of the summer months. Overall, Nanded is characterized by a hot summer and a mild, pleasant winter.

Substantial daily temperature fluctuations are noticeable, especially in the dry months. For example, in January, the difference between the average maximum (29.5°C) and average minimum (17.2°C) temperature is more than 12 degrees. A similar pattern is observed in other months outside the rainy season (June-September), when cloud cover and precipitation somewhat smooth out temperature contrasts between day and night. In monsoon months, such as July and August, daily fluctuations are smaller, with the difference between maximum and minimum temperatures being about 5-6 degrees.

Precipitation

In the city of Nanded, there is a distinct seasonality of precipitation, which is characteristic of a monsoon climate. Dry weather prevails here for most of the year. Thus, the period from November to May is distinguished by minimal rainfall. In January, February, March, May, November, and December, there is practically no rain (0 mm). The number of rainy days in these months is also small: in January, February, and December, there is on average one rainy day, in March and November – two, and in May – three. April also remains very dry, with insignificant rainfall (1 mm) and approximately three days when precipitation is possible.

The rainy season in Nanded usually begins in June and lasts until September, coinciding with the activity of the southwest monsoon. At this time, the amount of precipitation and the number of rainy days increase sharply. July is the culmination of the rainy season, bringing the most substantial volume of precipitation (12 mm) and the maximum number of rainy days in the year (25 days). In June, 5 mm of precipitation falls, and in August and September – 6 mm each; in each of these months, it rains quite often, on average about 19 days. The nature of precipitation during this period is typically regular rains which, judging by the monthly average, ensure constant moisture, although the total sum of precipitation may seem low for a monsoon period.

Thus, the driest months in Nanded are January, February, March, May, November, and December. The greatest amount of precipitation and its frequency occur in July. October serves as a transitional month: the monsoon retreats, precipitation drops to 3 mm, and the number of rainy days decreases to approximately 11.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Nanded, it is important to consider its predominantly hot and dry climate for most of the year. From November to May, precipitation is practically absent, and temperatures are high, especially from March to May, when the average maximum can reach 36-40°C. During this period, the basis of your wardrobe should consist of light, breathable natural fabrics, such as cotton and linen. Be sure to bring sunscreen with a high SPF, a head covering (hat or cap), and sunglasses for protection against the intense sun. In the winter months (December-February), the daytime temperature remains comfortably warm (around 29°C), however, evenings and nights can be cooler (around 17°C), so a light sweater, cardigan, or shawl will be very useful.

From June to September, the monsoon season arrives in Nanded, bringing a significant amount of precipitation (up to 25 rainy days per month) and increased humidity, while the air temperature remains warm, averaging 26-30°C. For this time of year, you will need a reliable umbrella or a light raincoat. Prefer clothes made of quick-drying materials and choose footwear that can handle moisture or dries quickly, for example, sandals or waterproof sneakers. Due to high humidity, insect repellent may also come in handy. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity for comfortably exploring the city. The principle of layering in clothing will help you easily adapt to weather changes throughout the day or when moving from air-conditioned rooms to the street.
