VMRDA Visakha Aircraft Museum

About

Imagine the chance to touch a legend of naval aviation without leaving the comfort of the city's promenade. Visakhapatnam offers tourists a unique experience at the Visakha Aviation Museum, where the main exhibit is an actual Soviet anti-submarine aircraft, the Tupolev Tu-142M. This "submarine hunter" faithfully served the Indian Navy for nearly three decades and has now been transformed into one of the city's most striking attractions.

The museum is located outdoors, right across from the famous Submarine Museum in the RK Beach area. India carefully preserves its military history, and this site is a clear testament to that. Every day, thousands of visitors come here to appreciate the scale of engineering and learn more about maritime border patrols.

The complex includes not only the aircraft itself but also a well-equipped exhibition hall featuring aviation components, as well as modern interactive zones. Thanks to the thoughtful landscape design and proximity to the ocean, a visit to the museum becomes more than just a history lesson—it’s a pleasant walk in the atmosphere of the sea breeze.

What to Do

Start your journey through the exhibition in the display hall, which houses complex mechanisms: from massive engines and propellers to submarine detection systems like sonobuoys of various frequencies. Here, you can examine anti-submarine missiles, flight recorders, and life rafts used by the crew. Information panels and an audio guide will help you understand the purpose of each piece of equipment.

The most exciting experience awaits as you board the Tu-142M via a special walkway. The original interior has been preserved inside: you'll see the pilot's cockpit, crew stations with uniformed mannequins, and even the bomb bays. For those seeking extra thrills, the museum offers a paid VR flight simulator, allowing you to take a virtual flight using virtual reality goggles.

The museum is ideal for family outings: children are thrilled by the chance to climb inside a real giant, while adults will appreciate the depth of historical information. After your tour, be sure to take a photo outside—the majestic fuselage of the aircraft against the backdrop of the sea looks truly impressive.

Getting There

The attraction is located in the heart of the tourist zone on Beach Road, right next to the popular RK Beach. If you are in the city center, it is most convenient to use a taxi service (via the Uber or Ola apps) or traditional auto-rickshaws. The journey from Visakhapatnam Railway Station takes about 15–20 minutes (a distance of approximately 5–10 km).

For those arriving from the airport, a taxi ride will take about half an hour depending on traffic. The museum is within walking distance of other iconic spots on the promenade, so many tourists prefer to get here by public transport — buses running along the coastline stop right at the beach. If you are traveling by rental car, there are parking areas provided near the museum complex.

History & Facts

The history of this exhibit is impressive: the Tupolev Tu-142M aircraft served the Indian Navy for 29 years. During this time, it spent more than 30,000 hours in the air and, remarkably, never encountered a single accident. Its service journey ended in the spring of 2017 at the INS Rajali airbase, after which the decision was made to preserve the aircraft as historical heritage.

The project to transform this giant into an open-air museum cost the authorities approximately 14 crore rupees. The foundation for the site was laid by Nara Chandrababu Naidu, and the grand opening in December 2017 was conducted by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind. This event was an important step in enhancing the tourism appeal of the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The Tu-142M aircraft itself is a Soviet design and was long considered one of the most effective means of maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare. Today, it serves as a monument to Indian naval aviation, demonstrating the power of technology and the contribution of military pilots to the security of the country's maritime borders.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the exhibition hall with its aviation equipment and examine the aircraft's internal compartments in detail, most tourists need about 1.5 to 2 hours. This is enough time to listen to the audio guide and take some memorable photos.

On weekends and holidays, the museum's popularity increases, which can lead to queues at the entrance to the aircraft's narrow fuselage or for the VR simulators. In these cases, we recommend allowing about 2.5 hours for your visit to ensure a comfortable experience and to see all the exhibits without rushing.

Working Hours

The museum is open to visitors daily, though the schedule differs between weekdays and weekends. From Monday to Saturday, entry is available from 2:00 PM to 8:30 PM. On Sundays, the doors open twice: the morning session lasts from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, and after a short break, the museum resumes work from 2:00 PM until the evening.

Since the official schedule may change depending on holidays or maintenance work, visitors are advised to check the current operating hours on-site or via official tourism portals before their trip.
