Kyzylorda Region Museum

About

A journey through the history of the republic's southern region is incomplete without a visit to the Kyzylorda Regional Museum. This is one of the oldest and most significant cultural centers, carefully preserving the heritage of the Syr Darya region in the city of Kyzylorda. Since its founding in 1939, the museum has grown from a small collection within the walls of an old church to a modern scientific complex that is the pride of all Kazakhstan.

Today, the museum is housed in a new specialized building opened in June 2025. Its funds contain an incredible number of treasures—about 158,000 exhibits. Here, history comes to life through archaeological artifacts, exquisite jewelry, and household items that have shaped the region's character for centuries. The museum is a true guardian of memory, uniting ancient traditions and modern achievements under one roof.

Special value lies not only in the content but also in its presentation: the exhibition occupies 14 halls and covers everything from flora and fauna to the secrets of the Baikonur Cosmodrome. This place will interest both serious researchers and tourists wishing to travel through the centuries in a single visit, seeing batyr armor and rare manuscripts in ancient languages with their own eyes.

What to Do

Inside the museum, visitors will find an exciting immersion into the past through themed halls. Be sure to linger in the Archaeology and Ethnography halls: here you can see a reconstruction of a traditional six-pole yurt with full interior furnishings, as well as rare wood and felt products. History enthusiasts will be impressed by finds from the Syganak settlement and a collection of medieval coins, reminiscent of the Silk Road era.

Those interested in more modern history should visit the exhibition dedicated to the Baikonur Cosmodrome. It is a unique opportunity to learn about the region's contribution to space exploration. For visual learners, the museum presents copies of paintings by the legendary Vereshchagin, taxidermy of rare local animals, and a rich collection of national jewelry—from massive bracelets (bilezik) to elegant pendants.

The process of exploring the exhibits is enhanced by modern technology: the halls are equipped with LED screens and touch-screen kiosks broadcasting documentaries and programs about the region's prominent figures. If you have time left, be sure to stop by the art gallery or visit one of the museum's branches to round out your impressions of the region's cultural wealth.

Getting There

The museum is located at 20 Auezov St, making it easily accessible from anywhere in the city. If you are in the center, the building can be reached at a leisurely pace by following the main city signs or using navigation maps.

For those arriving from outlying districts or the airport (which is about 10 km from the museum), it is most convenient to take a taxi. The trip will take about 20–30 minutes. City buses also run towards the center; after getting off at the nearest stop, you will only have a few minutes' walk. The railway station is very close, just 1–2 km away, so it is even reachable on foot.

If you are traveling by private or rental car, there are parking spaces provided near the museum complex. The modern museum building is visible from afar, so you are unlikely to miss this important cultural site.

History & Facts

The history of the Kyzylorda Regional Museum began on February 7, 1939. Initially, it was located in a unique architectural monument—the building of the former Perovsk Kazan-Mother of God Orthodox Church, built at the end of the 19th century. Its first director was A. Krylov, and the foundation of the first collection consisted of authentic relics: armor of Kazakh batyrs, ancient cannons from the Ak-Mechet fortress, and coins from the Silk Road era.

In the post-war decades, the museum actively expanded its holdings. In the 1950s, the collection was enriched with copies of paintings by the famous artist V. Vereshchagin, as well as valuable archaeological finds from the ancient settlement of Syganak. Scientific expeditions led by renowned scholars allowed for the collection of unique ethnographic materials, rare books, and the region's musical heritage (recordings of kyuys).

A major milestone was 1985, when the museum moved into a specially designated building recognized as an architectural monument. However, the most significant event in recent history was the opening of a modern high-tech complex in June 2025. Today, the museum's collection numbers about 158,000 exhibits, a significant portion of which has already been digitized to preserve the region's cultural code.

Time Needed

To thoughtfully explore all 14 halls and examine the details of the rich ethnographic collection, most visitors need 2 to 3 hours. The exhibition is quite extensive, and each section deserves individual attention.

If you plan to book a guided tour or study the information on multimedia stands in detail, it’s worth setting aside a little more time. The museum makes an excellent half-day program that can be combined with a walk through the city's nearby squares and parks.

Working Hours

The museum's doors are open to residents and guests of the city daily. You can visit the exhibitions from 09:00 to 19:00. The museum operates without weekends or lunch breaks, which is very convenient for tourists with tight travel schedules.

Nevertheless, before visiting on public holidays, it is recommended to check the official website or call the contact number to confirm any potential changes to the schedule or the timing of special themed events.
