In the heart of the city of Semey lies a unique cultural landmark — the State Abay Historical, Cultural, and Literary-Memorial Museum-Reserve. It is one of the most important centers of enlightenment in Kazakhstan, dedicated to the life and creative heritage of Abay Kunanbayev. The great poet, philosopher, and composer is considered the founder of Kazakh written literature, and this museum carefully preserves the memory of his invaluable contribution to world culture.

The modern museum complex is impressive in its scale: it is an entire complex uniting nine exhibitions and several branches. The main building with its majestic dome was erected in 1995, becoming the architectural centerpiece of the complex. Adjacent to it are a research center and the historic Roman Ershov merchant's house, which houses part of the collection.
The Akhmet Riza mosque-madrasah, part of the reserve, holds particular historical value. It was within these walls that the young Abay learned the fundamentals of science, and today visitors can see the place where the future great thinker's worldview was shaped. The museum-reserve's territory extends far beyond the city, covering thousands of hectares of commemorative sites related to Abay's life.
