Weather Overview

The climate in Nuevo Laredo can be characterised as arid or semi-arid. The city features hot summers and mild, dry winters. Throughout the year, sunny weather prevails, and precipitation is minimal, making rain a rare occurrence in any season. Travellers should be prepared for significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, as well as between seasons.

The city has two clearly defined main seasons. Summer, lasting from June to August, is a period of intense heat. The average daily temperature during this time often rises above 37°C, with August being the hottest month. Winter, from December to February, on the other hand, offers very comfortable conditions with mild and pleasant daytime temperatures around 21-24°C. Spring and autumn are transitional periods when temperatures rise or fall rapidly.

Temperature

The climate in Nuevo Laredo is characterised by distinct seasons with very hot summers and mild, cool winters. The annual temperature range here is quite significant. The sweltering months are traditionally July and August, when the average air temperature confidently stays above 32°C. The coldest month of the year is January, yet even during this period, the average temperature is a comfortable 15.9°C.

Summer in Nuevo Laredo is a period of intense heat. From June to August, daytime temperatures regularly rise to 37-38°C, and sometimes even higher. Nights bring only relative coolness, as minimum temperatures at the height of summer rarely drop below 25-26°C. Spring and autumn act as pleasant transitional seasons. In March and April, the weather is already very warm, while in September and October, the heat gradually subsides, giving way to more moderate temperatures.

Winter in the city, by contrast, is very mild and pleasant for travel. In December and January, daytime temperatures usually hover around 21-23°C, creating ideal conditions for walks. However, it is worth being prepared for nights becoming noticeably cooler, with the thermometer potentially dropping to 10-12°C. Such a noticeable difference between day and night readings, often exceeding 10 degrees, is a characteristic feature of the local climate throughout the year.

Precipitation

The climate in Nuevo Laredo is distinguished by extreme aridity, with minimal precipitation throughout the year. There is no distinct rainy season here, which is characteristic of many other regions in Mexico. The weather remains predominantly dry, and rain is more of an exception than a rule in any month.

Despite the general dryness, periods with a slightly increased probability of precipitation can be identified. The "wettest" months are considered to be May and September, when the number of rainy days can reach eight. In April, May, August, and September, the maximum amount of precipitation for this region falls—about 2 mm. In contrast, the winter months, especially February, are the driest, when it might not rain at all.

It is important to note that even in those months when it rains more often, the intensity is very low. Precipitation usually takes the form of light drizzle or short, weak showers, rather than heavy downpours. Given the temperature, snow does not fall here. Travellers can expect predominantly clear and sunny weather at almost any time of the year.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Nuevo Laredo, it is worth preparing for a hot and predominantly dry climate. The foundation of your wardrobe year-round should be light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Given the high temperatures, especially in the summer months, be sure to bring sunscreen with high SPF, a wide-brimmed hat or cap, and sunglasses. Since you will likely want to explore the city, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity.

Although the weather in Nuevo Laredo is consistently warm, there are slight seasonal differences. In summer, from May to September, expect intense heat, so choose the lightest clothing. During this period, the number of rainy days increases slightly, but rainfall is rare, so a compact umbrella or a light waterproof windbreaker will be sufficient in case of a sudden shower. In winter, from December to February, the daytime temperature is comfortable, but evenings and nights can be cool. We recommend taking a light jacket, cardigan, or a few long-sleeved shirts to apply the layering principle.

Besides clothing, think about practical items that will make your journey more comfortable. A reusable water bottle will help maintain hydration in hot weather. A small backpack or shoulder bag will be useful for day trips to carry essentials: from your wallet and phone to sunscreen. And a light scarf or shawl can serve both as sun protection during the day and as a stylish accessory on a cool evening.
