General Weather Overview

In the city of Palenque, a typical tropical climate awaits you, characterised by hot and humid weather throughout the year. There are no sharp temperature changes between seasons, so whenever you arrive, you will be greeted by warmth. Daytime temperatures consistently stay in the range of 27°C to 35°C, creating ideal conditions for those who love hot weather.

The year in Palenque can be clearly divided into two main seasons: dry and wet. The dry season usually falls in the period from February to May. Minimal rainfall occurs during this time, and April and May are the hottest months of the year. From June to November, the rainy season arrives, peaking in September and October. During these months, the number of rainy days increases, making the surrounding jungles particularly lush and green, although one should be prepared for frequent downpours.

Temperature

Palenque is dominated by a hot and humid tropical climate, characterised by high temperatures year-round. The sweltering period is considered to be the spring months, especially April and May. At this time, the average temperature reaches 29-30°C, and daytime highs regularly rise to an impressive 34-35°C. Conversely, the "coolest" months are December and January, but even then the weather remains very warm: the average temperature holds at 23°C, and nighttime lows rarely drop below 19°C.

The summer season, which coincides with the rainy season from June to October, remains very hot. Average daytime temperatures during this period are around 32°C, and nighttime temperatures are around 23°C. Although frequent rains bring temporary relief and increase humidity, the overall temperature picture remains consistently hot. Winter, from December to February, offers the most comfortable conditions for visiting. The days are pleasantly warm, with temperatures around 27-29°C, while nights bring refreshing coolness, making this time ideal for long walks and exploring the ruins.

One of the characteristic features of Palenque's climate is noticeable daily temperature fluctuations, especially during the dry and hot season from March to May. During these months, the difference between day and night temperatures can exceed 10°C. It is intensely hot during the day, but after sunset, the air cools down to more comfortable levels. In the rainy season, these fluctuations are smoothed out due to high cloud cover and humidity.

Precipitation

In the city of Palenque, the climate is characterised by a clear division into wet and dry seasons, which is typical for tropical regions. Thanks to high temperatures year-round, precipitation here falls exclusively as rain, and snow is completely excluded.

The rainy season covers the period from June to October. At this time, rains become a frequent, almost daily occurrence. Humidity peaks in autumn: September is the month with the highest number of rainy days (on average 26), and October is the one with the highest rainfall levels. Summer months, such as June and August, are also very rainy, with precipitation expected more than 20 days a month. Typically, these are short but intense tropical downpours that most often occur in the afternoon.

The dry season lasts from late winter to spring, offering tourists sunnier and more predictable weather. The driest months are considered March and April, when rainfall is minimal, and the number of rainy days does not exceed 6-7 for the entire month. February is also relatively dry. This period is often considered the most comfortable for visiting archaeological sites and exploring the surroundings, since the likelihood of a sudden downpour is significantly lower.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Palenque, it is important to consider its hot and humid tropical climate, which persists throughout the year. The basis of your wardrobe should be light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high SPF cream to protect against the intense sun. Since the main activity here is exploring ancient ruins with uneven paths, footwear plays a key role — choose comfortable trainers or sturdy trekking sandals in which you can move comfortably for several hours.

Although it is warm year-round in Palenque, the weather changes noticeably depending on the season. The dry and hottest season lasts approximately from February to May. At this time, you will need the lightest clothing to cope with high temperatures. The rainy season, continuing from June to November, is characterised by frequent but usually short downpours. During this period, indispensable items will be a light waterproof jacket or raincoat and a small umbrella. Despite the precipitation, heat and humidity persist, so clothing should be not only moisture-protective but also "breathable". It is also highly recommended to bring insect repellent, especially for evening walks and jungle treks.
