Weather Overview

The climate in Nepalganj can be characterized as subtropical, with hot summers and mild, pleasant winters. The city is located on the plains, so it is significantly warmer here than in the high-altitude regions of Nepal. The weather is distinguished by clear seasonality, where periods of intense heat are replaced by the monsoon season, and then transition into comfortable dry months.

The hottest time of the year falls on the period from April to June, when daytime temperatures often exceed 35°C. With the arrival of July, the weather pattern changes: the wet season begins. The number of rainy days rises sharply, reaching its peak in July and August. Despite frequent rainfall, the air remains very warm, which creates high humidity.

For those who prefer cooler and more stable weather, the ideal time to visit is the period from late autumn to early spring. From November to March, rains practically cease, and clear, dry weather sets in. In winter, the average temperature stays around 14–17°C, creating excellent conditions for walks and excursions without exhausting heat.

Temperature

The climate in Nepalganj is characterized by clearly defined seasons and a significant temperature range throughout the year. The hottest period is late spring and early summer: in May and June, the average temperature holds at 29-30°C. At this time, daytime highs regularly exceed the 35°C mark, creating conditions of true tropical heat, which begins to subside only with the arrival of monsoon rains in July.

The summer months, especially July and August, remain warm but become more humid. Although the extreme heat recedes slightly (average highs drop to 31°C), high humidity makes the weather muggy. September brings gradual relief, maintaining summer warmth but without the scorching sun characteristic of the pre-monsoon period.

Winter in Nepalganj is mild and comfortable for travel, completely unlike the severe cold of high-altitude Nepal. The coldest month is considered to be January with an average temperature of 14.1°C. Travellers should take into account noticeable daily fluctuations in temperatures during this season: while during the day the air warms up to a pleasant 20-22°C, at night temperatures can drop to 8-9°C, so warm clothes will definitely be useful for evening walks.

Precipitation

Precipitation patterns in Nepalganj have a distinct seasonality, dividing the year into dry and wet periods. Winter, spring, and late autumn are ideal for travellers preferring clear weather. From November to April, rains here are a rarity; for example, in November and March, precipitation practically does not fall, and the number of wet days tends towards zero. This time is considered the most comfortable for exploring the city without the need to constantly carry an umbrella.

With the onset of summer, the picture changes radically under the influence of monsoons. The wettest period falls on July and August, when rains become a frequent occurrence: statistics record up to 28–29 rainy days per month. June and September are also distinguished by a high frequency of precipitation. If your trip is planned for the summer months, it is worth being prepared for the sky often being overcast with clouds, and significantly increased air humidity.

What to Pack

Given Nepalganj's location on the plains, the climate here is significantly hotter than in the mountain regions of Nepal, especially in the spring and summer months. If your trip falls during the period from April to June, when the daytime temperature often exceeds 35°C, the foundation of your wardrobe should be light clothing made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Be sure to take care of protection from the active sun: a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and cream with a high SPF factor are necessary for safe walks.

From June to September, the monsoon season arrives in the region, characterized by high humidity and very frequent rainfall (up to 29 rainy days per month). At this time, indispensable items will be a light but durable raincoat, a compact umbrella, and waterproof footwear that dries quickly, such as trekking sandals. Since even under the rain the temperature remains high (about 28–30°C), avoid clothing that is too thick, giving preference to items that ensure good ventilation.

The winter months (from December to February) in Nepalganj are mild and dry, but are distinguished by a noticeable temperature difference: during the day the air warms up to a comfortable 20°C, while at night it can cool down to 8–10°C. For this season, it is best to use the layering principle: take t-shirts for the daytime and a fleece sweater or light jacket for evenings and early mornings. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable and broken-in walking shoes will be the key to a comfortable journey.
