General Weather Conditions

The climate of Hilversum can be described as temperate maritime, which is typical for most of the Netherlands. Due to the influence of the sea, there is no exhausting heat in summer or severe frost in winter. The weather is characterised by mildness and the absence of sharp temperature changes, making the city comfortable to visit almost all year round.

Summer here is pleasant and not too hot: the average temperature in July and August hovers around 18–22°C, which is ideal for long walks and sightseeing. Winters are cool but not harsh, with average readings around 5°C. Snow falls infrequently, and frosts are rare, giving way to damp and windy weather.

A characteristic feature of the local climate is stable humidity and regular precipitation throughout the year. There are roughly the same number of rainy days in any season — from 12 to 16 per month, so tourists are strongly advised to carry an umbrella or a waterproof jacket. However, rains are often short-lived, quickly giving way to clear spells.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Hilversum is distinguished by moderation and the absence of extreme fluctuations, which is characteristic of the mild climate of the Netherlands. The coldest month of the year is traditionally January, when the average temperature is about 4.7°C, and night-time readings rarely drop below 2.7°C. Winters here can be described as cool but not severe: strong frosts happen infrequently, and daytime temperatures in December and February confidently stay in the positive range, reaching 7-8°C.

The summer season brings pleasant warmth without exhausting heat, making walks around the city particularly comfortable. The warmest month is August with an average daily maximum of 22.5°C, only slightly ahead of July with its 22.0°C. At this time of year, there is a noticeable but comfortable difference between daytime warmth and night-time freshness: after sunset, the temperature usually drops to 14-15°C, bringing coolness.

Transitional seasons are characterised by gradual weather changes. Spring gathers pace slowly: while in March the air warms up to 10°C, by May daytime temperatures already reach a comfortable 17.5°C. Autumn, conversely, begins with a mild September (up to 19.3°C during the day), but by November it cools rapidly to averages of 7.7°C, reminding one of the approaching winter.

Precipitation

When planning a trip to Hilversum, it is worth noting that precipitation is distributed quite evenly throughout the year, which is typical for the temperate climate of the Netherlands. There is no distinct dry season in the city: rain can fall in any month, so having an umbrella or a high-quality raincoat in your luggage will be very useful.

Precipitation falls most frequently in the winter period. The record holder for the number of inclement days is December, when an average of 16 days with precipitation is recorded. In the cold season, especially in January and February, wet snow is possible, however, travellers most often encounter prolonged rain or drizzle.

Spring and early summer bring a relative lull: April and June are considered the "driest" months, counting about 12 rainy days. Nevertheless, even at the height of summer, in July and August, rains happen quite often (about 14 days a month), but they are often short-lived in nature, quickly giving way to the sun.

What to Pack

Hilversum features a temperate maritime climate typical of the Netherlands, where the weather can change several times a day. The main principle when packing your suitcase is layering. Since it rains quite evenly throughout the year (on average 12–16 rainy days monthly), a waterproof windbreaker with a hood or a high-quality raincoat will become your main companions. It is also strongly recommended to take a sturdy umbrella resistant to wind gusts and waterproof shoes for comfortable walks around the city.

If your trip is planned for the period from late autumn to early spring, when the temperature fluctuates between +3…+10 °C, be sure to grab warm sweaters, a scarf, and gloves: high humidity makes the air feel noticeably colder. Summer in Hilversum is usually mild and not hot, with average highs around +22 °C. T-shirts and light trousers are suitable for this season, but do not forget a hoodie or cardigan for cool evenings, which happen even in July and August.

Regardless of the season, rely on comfortable shoes with flat soles, as you will be walking a lot to see the architecture and parks. Despite frequent cloudiness, sunscreen and sunglasses will be useful in the spring-summer period when the sun can be quite active. A small city backpack will also be useful to carry water, an umbrella, and removed layers of clothing when the weather changes.
