Previously, the stands of an old stadium buzzed on this site, but after a large-scale reconstruction, the territory was transformed into a modern landscaped park. Today, it is not just a recreation area, but a vivid example of how urban space can combine natural beauty and cultural significance.

What to Do

The main pleasure here is taking a leisurely stroll along the winding paths. Nature lovers will be impressed by the richness of the local flora: the park features over 1,100 plant species. This turns an ordinary visit into a mini botanical adventure, where exotic trees or rare tropical flowers await around every corner.

The park's grounds are adorned with interesting sculptures that introduce guests to the culture of the region. These serve as excellent backdrops for photographs that capture the spirit of Mindanao. Many come here for a quiet break, simply to sit on a bench in the shade of the trees and watch the city bustle from the sidelines.

For those looking for activity, the park offers open spaces suitable for light exercise or family picnics. Evenings are particularly popular here—the soft light and cool air make for a very comfortable walk, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the tropical holiday atmosphere.

Getting There

Located in the heart of Davao City in the Poblacion District, the park is easily accessible for most tourists. If you are staying downtown, a pleasant walk to the park gates on Jln Palma Gil St will take very little time.

For those coming from further away, the most convenient way to get there is by taxi or the jeepneys, which are iconic in the Philippines. Local drivers know the spot well, as it is a major landmark in the city. Simply say "People's Park," and you will be dropped off right at the main entrance.

If you have rented a car, keep in mind that traffic in the city center can be heavy during peak hours. Nevertheless, the park's proximity to major administrative buildings and shopping centers makes it a convenient stop on any city tour itinerary.

History & Facts

The history of this place didn't begin with shady alleys, but with the roar of crowds and athletic competitions. Previously, this area served as the city's primary venue for major events, known as the PTA Grounds. The decision to transform the stadium into a modern urban park was made in 2006, with an investment of approximately 71 million Philippine pesos.

Interestingly, the name for the park was chosen by the community. City authorities organized a "Name the Park" contest, which received over 900 entries. The winning entry was "People's Park", suggested by Romeo Sardon, a retired seaman. This name perfectly reflects the essence of the place—it was created for the people and in honor of the city's residents.

The first visitors were able to stroll through the renovated paths in August 2007 during the celebration of the famous Kadayawan festival. Although work was only 90% complete at the time, the official grand opening took place in December of that same year, marking the arrival of a new green symbol on the map of Mindanao.

Time Needed

For a leisurely introduction to the park, most visitors find 1–2 hours to be sufficient. This is enough time to walk the main paths, admire the unique sculptures, and enjoy the variety of tropical plants.

If you plan to have a small picnic in the shade of the trees or want to take many photos, it is worth setting aside about half a day. In the evening, when the heat subsides and the decorative lighting comes on, the atmosphere of the park changes, and many guests prefer to stay longer to observe the local rhythm of life.
