Portimao welcomes travellers with the Mediterranean climate typical of the Algarve region, characterised by a large number of sunny days and comfortable temperatures throughout the year. The weather here can be described as moderately warm and very pleasant: summers are hot and dry, perfect for beach holidays, whilst winters are mild, without severe cold but with periodic rainfall.

The hottest and sunniest period falls in July and August, when the average daytime temperature rises to 28-29°C, and the probability of precipitation drops to zero. This is the peak of the tourist season when the weather is most stable. The winter months, from December to February, bring coolness; however, the thermometer rarely drops below 8-9°C even at night, keeping at a comfortable 15°C during the day. During this time of year, the number of cloudy and rainy days increases.

Spring and early autumn are considered excellent times for sightseeing holidays. In May and September, warm but not exhausting weather sets in with temperatures around 23-26°C. Such conditions allow you to enjoy walks around the city and the coast, avoiding both the summer heat and winter dampness.

The climate in Portimao is distinguished by its mildness and comfort throughout the year, making this region attractive to visit in any season. Winter in Portimao is very mild and resembles a prolonged spring. Although nights become cooler (around 9-10°C), the absence of extreme cold allows you to enjoy the beauties of Portugal without the need to wear heavy winter clothing.

Since the temperature even in the coldest months rarely drops below 8–9°C, precipitation falls exclusively in the form of rain; snow is uncharacteristic for this coastal region of Portugal.

Transitional seasons and winter in Portimao remain quite mild. In May, June, and September, the number of rainy days is minimal (only 2–3 days per month), which ensures comfortable conditions for excursions. In winter, in January and February, rains occur with moderate frequency (about 5–6 days), so even in the low season, the weather often delights travellers with dry and pleasant days.

For a summer trip to Portimao (from June to September), choose light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Since temperatures often rise to 28–29°C in July and August and there is practically no rain, be sure to bring swimwear, sunglasses, and a hat. Do not forget high-quality sunscreen, as the sun in southern Portugal is very active. Despite the daytime heat, evenings on the Atlantic coast can be fresh due to the breeze, so a light cardigan or wrap will come in handy for walks after sunset.

If you are planning a trip during the winter months or the off-season (spring and late autumn), the best solution is the principle of layering. Winters here are mild, with an average temperature of about 12–13°C, but nights can be cool (down to 8°C). You will need jeans, jumpers, and a windproof jacket or light coat to protect against the ocean wind. Given that in spring and autumn, especially in March and April, the number of rainy days increases, it is wise to pack a compact umbrella or raincoat in your suitcase.

Regardless of the season, pay special attention to your choice of footwear. For comfortable exploration of the city and walks along the picturesque rocky beaches, comfortable trainers or flat shoes with non-slip soles are ideal. Many streets are paved with traditional Portuguese cobblestones, which can be uneven and slippery, so high-heeled shoes are best left exclusively for evening visits to restaurants.
