Thanks to low humidity, even severe frosts are endured somewhat more easily than in coastal regions, and summer days are often sunny and clear. Travellers should take this dryness into account and be prepared for the fact that even in the summer period, nights can be cool.

The climate in this region is distinguished by incredible contrast and a harsh character, typical of northern territories. The settlement of Batagay is known for its extremely cold winters, which last for most of the year. The coldest month is January, when the average temperature drops to -43.1°C, and night frosts regularly surpass the -45°C mark. December and February are not far behind in severity, maintaining figures in the range of -37°C to -39°C, making warm equipment vital for any visit during this period.

Summer comes to these parts for a short time but brings long-awaited warmth and an opportunity to rest from the permafrost. The warmest months are June and July, when the air warms up on average to a comfortable +15.5°C...+15.9°C. During the day, the temperature often rises above +20°C, creating pleasant conditions for walks, although nights even in summer remain quite fresh, with readings around +10°C. There is practically no exhausting heat here, which makes the summer season mild and favourable.

A feature of the temperature regime is the colossal annual amplitude: the difference between winter minimums and summer maximums is more than 60 degrees. Transitional seasons here are rapid: while in March strong frosts around -23°C still persist, by May positive temperatures are established. Similarly, autumn quickly yields its position: after a relatively mild September (+3.7°C), it gets sharply colder in October to -10°C, marking the imminent beginning of a long winter.

When planning a trip to Batagay, it is worth considering that this area is characterized by a rather dry climate with a small total amount of precipitation. The winter period, which lasts here for most of the year (from October to April), is distinguished not only by extremely low temperatures but also by minimal humidity. In these months, especially from January to March, snowfall happens extremely rarely — on average, only 1–2 days with precipitation are recorded, and their volume is close to zero.

With the arrival of warmth, the probability of precipitation increases, although downpours are an infrequent phenomenon here. Summer months, such as June and July, bring light rains; the number of wet days varies from 6 to 8. Precipitation at this time of year is usually short-lived and does not create serious obstacles for walks, as its intensity remains low (about 1 mm per month).

The "cloudiest" period can be called the beginning of autumn. According to statistics, September leads in the frequency of precipitation: about 10 wet days are observed in this month. At this time, rain may be replaced by wet snow as the temperature drops. Nevertheless, even in the wettest season, the weather remains sufficiently stable, without the prolonged rainy seasons characteristic of the tropics.

Since the climate in the settlement of Batagay is distinguished by extreme severity in the winter period, packing a suitcase requires special attention. From November to March, the thermometer consistently drops below -40°C here, so the basis of your wardrobe should be high-quality thermal underwear, woollen sweaters, and a specialized down jacket or fur coat designed for the conditions of the Far North. Be sure to take warm mittens (they warm better than gloves) with you, a fur hat covering your ears, and a voluminous scarf with which you can cover your face from the stinging frost.

Summer, which lasts from June to August, brings a sharp contrast with comfortable temperatures in the region of +15...+21°C. For this period, light clothing made of natural fabrics is suitable, but do not forget the principle of layering: evenings can be cool, so a fleece jacket or windbreaker will definitely come in handy. Spring and autumn are characterized by rapid temperature changes and frosts, so having a demi-season jacket and waterproof shoes will not be superfluous, even though heavy precipitation falls rarely here.

Regardless of the season, an important element of equipment remains comfortable shoes with non-slip soles. In winter, these should be insulated high boots capable of withstanding extreme minus temperatures, and in summer — trainers or trekking boots for walking. Since the air is dry in winter, and the sun can be quite active in summer, put a rich protective cream against frost and sunscreen for the warm season in your first aid kit.
