General Weather Character

The climate in the settlement of Chara can be characterized as severe and sharply continental. Typical for this area are extremely cold, prolonged winters and a rather short, cool summer. The annual temperature variation here is very large: from biting frosts reaching -30°C and lower in January to moderate warmth in the middle of the year.

The summer season is not distinguished by intense heat: even in July, the warmest month, the thermometer averages +15°C, rarely exceeding +20°C. A notable feature of the weather is the distribution of precipitation: winters here are predominantly dry with little snow, whereas the warm period, starting from May through August, is accompanied by a large number of rainy and overcast days.

The transitional seasons—spring and autumn—pass rapidly, with quick changes in temperature. Snow and frosts are possible as late as May and as early as September, so travellers planning a trip should be prepared for cool weather even at the height of summer and must bring warm clothes and rain protection.

Temperature

The period of consistent sub-zero temperatures in this area lasts from October to April. January is characterized by the lowest readings: the average value is -27.9°C, and night frosts regularly reach -32.7°C. Even during the transitional season, the air warms up slowly, and in May the average temperature barely exceeds +2°C.

The summer time is characterized by a pronounced daily amplitude. In July, when maximum daytime temperatures of about +20.0°C are recorded, nights remain cool, dropping to +10.1°C. The average temperature of the warmest month holds at +15.1°C, which requires travellers to be ready for weather changes within a single day.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Chara is distributed unevenly throughout the year, which is characteristic of the sharply continental climate of this corner of Russia. The winter period, lasting from November to March, is distinguished not only by severe frosts but also by low humidity. During this time, a minimal amount of precipitation falls, exclusively as snow. January and December are the driest months, when literally 2–3 days with snowfall are recorded, and the air remains clear and dry.

With the arrival of warmth, the picture changes: the number of wet days grows rapidly. The peak of precipitation falls on summer, especially July, which is considered the rainiest month of the year. In the middle of summer, rains can occur very frequently—statistics indicate up to 19 days with precipitation, although their total volume remains moderate. August and June are also distinguished by high humidity, so in summer, an umbrella or raincoat will become mandatory companions for the tourist.

Transitional seasons demonstrate a mixed weather character. In May and September, when average temperatures fluctuate around zero or slightly above, both rain and wet snow are possible. By October, the amount of precipitation noticeably decreases, and nature begins to prepare for the long winter.

What to Pack

A trip to Chara requires careful wardrobe preparation, as the climate here is severe and sharply continental. Winters in this region are long and extremely cold: in January and February, the temperature often drops below -30°C. The foundation of your luggage should consist of high-quality thermal underwear, woollen sweaters, and maximally warm outerwear—a down jacket or parka capable of withstanding Arctic frosts. Do not forget insulated trousers, mittens (they retain heat better than gloves), a hat covering the ears, and boots with thick soles and natural fur.

Summer in Chara is cool and short, so even in July, one should not count on intense heat. During the day, the air warms up on average to +15...+20°C, while nights remain cold. Considering that the number of days with precipitation is high in the summer months (up to 19 days in July), be sure to take a waterproof windbreaker, a raincoat, and reliable trekking shoes with water-repellent treatment. A fleece jacket will be an indispensable item for evening walks.

If your trip is planned for spring or autumn, the principle of layering should become the main rule. The weather at this time is changeable: April and October greet visitors with sub-zero temperatures, so it is important to be able to remove or add layers of clothing depending on conditions. Also, despite the cold, the spring sun can be very active, especially when reflecting off the snow, so sunglasses and cream with SPF will be very useful.
