How to get to Gelendzhik

When planning a journey to Gelendzhik, you are choosing one of the most picturesque resorts on the Black Sea coast of the Russian Federation. This sunny city, spread around a cosy bay, attracts tourists with its famous embankments, beaches, and mild climate. You can reach this destination in various ways: by a direct flight, by car along scenic southern routes, or by combining a train journey with a bus transfer.

The fastest way to reach the seaside is to fly to the local airport, Gelendzhik (GDZ), which is located in the immediate vicinity of the city limits. This allows you to begin your holiday almost immediately after landing, bypassing long transfers.

If there are no direct flights, travellers often choose to fly to neighbouring cities. The nearest alternative is the airport in Anapa (about 72 km away), as well as the major aviation hub in Krasnodar. It is worth noting that the transfer from Krasnodar will take some time, as the distance by road to the coast is approximately 170–180 km.

There is no railway station in Gelendzhik itself, so the train route usually involves a transfer to a bus or taxi. Tourists most often purchase tickets to stations in neighbouring major cities, from where regular connections to the resort are established.

The most convenient options are trips to Anapa (72 km from the resort) or to Krasnodar. When choosing the route via Krasnodar, it is important to remember that the subsequent journey to the sea by road transport will cover about 180 km.

Bus services remain an accessible and popular option for travelling to Gelendzhik, connecting the resort with most regions in the south of the country. Comfortable coaches run regularly from the bus stations of neighbouring transport hubs, delivering tourists directly to the city centre.

Although the exact travel time depends on the season and traffic conditions, a bus journey allows you to enjoy views of the foothills and the coast. This is an excellent alternative for those who have arrived by train or plane in neighbouring cities and are looking for a budget-friendly way to reach their final destination.

Travelling by private car offers freedom of movement and the opportunity to enjoy the southern landscapes. One of the shortest routes leads from the city of Anapa: the distance is about 93 km, which usually takes around 1.8 hours on the road.

Many tourists drive through the regional centre, Krasnodar, from where you need to drive approximately 182 km to the resort (about 3 hours of driving). A route from the direction of Kerch is also available, covering a distance of about 195 km, which will require a little over 3 hours behind the wheel.

1. Clothing and Footwear. In summer, light clothing made from natural fabrics, headwear, and sunglasses are essential. For evening walks along the embankment or excursions to the mountains, it is worth bringing a windbreaker or a light cardigan.
2. Transport. It is most pleasant to move around the city centre and the famous embankment on foot or by rented bicycle. For trips to remote areas or neighbouring villages, it is convenient to use local buses and taxis.
3. Finances. The official currency is the Russian Ruble. Bank cards are accepted almost everywhere; however, for visiting markets and small souvenir shops, it is better to carry cash.
4. Health. The southern sun is very active, so be sure to use cream with a high SPF. Pharmacies are frequently found in the city, but it is better to bring personal medications with you.
5. Beach Etiquette. It is customary to wear swimwear strictly on the beach. For visiting shops, cafes, and walking around the city, one should dress in ordinary, modest clothing.
6. Dining. Buy local fruits and churchkhela only in specially equipped places and markets. Try to avoid street food that has been left out in the heat without refrigeration.
