The three-tier construction is impressive in its scale: the diameter of the lower basin is 17 meters, and the central jets can soar to a height of up to 16 meters. This landmark in Russia is often called the "Fountain of Friendship," emphasizing its unifying significance for the residents and guests of the republic.

The main feature of the fountain is the complete synchronization of water flows, light, and music. To the sounds of classical masterpieces and national melodies, the water jets perform their unique "dance," changing pressure and direction in time with the compositions. In the evening, when the multi-colored rainbow lighting is turned on, the fountain transforms into a full-scale open-air theatrical show.

The main reason thousands of people come here is the light and music show. You can take a seat on one of the benches in Theater Square and watch the water jets move rhythmically to classical melodies. Be sure to wait for the performance of the anthem of Buryatia, "Tayozhnaya"—at that moment, the water dance looks particularly majestic.

For photography enthusiasts, this place provides plenty of opportunities. Capture shots of the fountain from a low angle to include the riders on the theater's portal in the frame, or wait until evening when the rainbow illumination paints the water in all the colors of the spectrum. From the airport (approximately 20 km away), it is most convenient to take a taxi or bus No. 135.

For those who prefer to travel by private or rental car, keep in mind that the area around the theater is pedestrianized. Parking spaces on adjacent streets are limited, so it is recommended to leave your car at the nearest paid or municipal parking lots and walk to the square.

The modern appearance of Theater Square took shape relatively recently. The light and music fountain, often called the "Fountain of Friendship," was officially opened on June 30, 2011. This event was timed to coincide with the large-scale celebration of the 350th anniversary of Buryatia's voluntary entry into the Russian state.

Interestingly, another fountain designed by Tsyremzhit Tsyrenzhapova stood on this same spot during the Soviet years. It was decorated with traditional Buryat ornaments and harmoniously complemented the theater's architecture. However, during the 2011 reconstruction, the old structure was dismantled, and a high-tech lotus-shaped complex was erected in its place in just two months.

The theater itself, which serves as the backdrop for the water cascades, is an outstanding architectural monument. Its construction began back in the 1930s, was interrupted during the war, and was fully completed in 1952. Today, the fountain and the theater building form a unified cultural ensemble that combines classical heritage with modern show technologies.

Usually, 30 to 60 minutes is enough for tourists to enjoy one cycle of the musical show, take vibrant photos, and stroll around the fountain's basin. This time is quite sufficient to appreciate the beauty of the water jets against the backdrop of the majestic theater.

If you plan to not only see the fountain but also relax on Theater Square or attend an evening performance, it is worth setting aside about 2–3 hours for this location. The evening is particularly conducive to a leisurely break when the illumination comes on and the square is filled with a special, festive atmosphere.

According to information services, the square area is open to the public 24 hours a day. You can admire the architectural ensemble and the fountain basin at any time of the day or night.

However, the musical accompaniment and water show follow a specific schedule: the fountain usually "dances" from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM. During the day, the performances take place without illumination, while the evening lights turn on at dusk, transforming the square into a fairy-tale space. Please note that in the event of strong winds, the automatic system may temporarily switch off the high jets for safety reasons.

The fountain's location in the historical center makes it an ideal starting point for a long walk. Exploring the surrounding streets will allow you to dive deeper into the atmosphere of the Buryat capital and see iconic architectural and artistic monuments.
