About

In the heart of the historical center of modern Volgograd, there is a place with incredible energy—the Memory Museum. It is located in the basement of the famous Central Department Store (TsUM), which stood as a silent witness to decisive moments of World War II on the territory of Russia.

This unique museum complex is dedicated to one of the most significant events in world history—the capture of the 6th German Army headquarters and its commander, General Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus. Unlike grand panoramas, this museum offers an intimate, almost personal atmosphere, allowing you to literally touch the walls that remember the finale of the Battle of Stalingrad.

The exhibition is a branch of "The Battle of Stalingrad" Museum-Reserve and features meticulously recreated interiors of the German headquarters. Here, history comes to life through authentic household items, military gear, and modern technology, creating a total immersion into the atmosphere of January 1943.

What to Do

Once inside, you will enter long brick corridors where every step echoes the past. In the museum, you can see the reconstructed room of Paulus, featuring the setting of his last refuge: from a radio station to personal belongings. The sense of presence is enhanced by a holographic installation visualizing the scene of the German command's surrender.

Be sure to linger in the hall showcasing the German infirmary. Here, authentic surgical instruments and medicines found during excavations are collected, vividly demonstrating the harsh daily life of soldiers in the besieged city. The exhibition halls also feature letters, photographs, and diaries, offering a look at the war through personal stories.

For those interested in multimedia content, the museum features interactive screens detailing the course of Operation Ring. And if you are lucky enough to be in Volgograd on commemorative dates (for example, January 31st), you can witness a historical reenactment of the surrender, performed annually by museum staff and volunteers.

Getting There

Located right at the city's "kilometer zero," the museum is extremely convenient to visit. It is situated in the basement of the Central Department Store (TsUM) building on Fallen Fighters Square (Ploshchad Pavshikh Bortsov). If you are staying in the center, you can walk to the museum entrance by heading toward the majestic Volgograd Hotel building and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

For those traveling from more distant areas, any public transport going to the "Ploshchad Pavshikh Bortsov" or "Central Department Store" stops will work. Dozens of bus and minibus routes pass through here. From the Volgograd-1 railway station, the walk takes no more than 15–20 minutes along Gogol Street.

If you are coming from Gumrak Airport, it is most convenient to use a taxi (the trip will take about 40–50 minutes) or take bus No. 6, which will take you directly to the city's central blocks. For drivers, there are parking areas near the square, though finding a free spot on weekdays can be difficult.

History & Facts

The building of the Stalingrad Central Department Store, which houses the exhibition today, is an architectural monument in its own right. Built in 1938 according to the design of M. P. Tsubikova, it was considered one of the most beautiful and modern commercial buildings in the USSR at the time. However, it gained world fame due to the events of the winter of 1943.

It was here, in a damp and cold basement, that the headquarters of the German 6th Army was located in January 1943. On January 31, soldiers of the 38th Motorized Rifle Brigade blocked the building. After brief negotiations, an event occurred that became a symbol of the war's turning point: the capture of Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus along with his staff. This moment marked the practical conclusion of the Battle of Stalingrad.

The "Memory" Museum itself was opened in 2003, and later, in 2012, it became part of the State Museum-Reserve "The Battle of Stalingrad." Restorers and historians have done an enormous amount of work to restore the atmosphere of those days, preserving the original brickwork and room layout that remember the footsteps of both German officers and Soviet soldiers.

Time Needed

To thoughtfully explore all the halls and soak in the atmosphere of the historical basement, most visitors need about 1 to 1.5 hours. The museum is quite compact, but its exhibition is very rich in details that you may want to examine for a long time.

If you plan to study archival documents and letters in detail or watch the multimedia installations, it's better to set aside a bit more time. A visit to the Memory Museum fits perfectly into a walking route through the city center as an important but not overly tiring stop.

Working Hours

When planning your visit, please take note of the opening hours. The museum is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday. Monday is a traditional day off when the exhibition is closed for maintenance.

The operating hours on open days are from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Keep in mind that the ticket office stops selling tickets and the entrance closes 30–40 minutes before closing time, so it is best to arrive no later than 5:00 PM to see all the halls without rushing.
