Shopping in Rorschach is a calm and leisurely activity, free from the hustle and bustle of major metropolises. The city does not claim to be a fashion capital, so you won't find huge shopping districts with luxury brands here. However, Switzerland is famous for the quality of its goods, and Rorschach offers excellent opportunities to purchase local products, souvenirs, and essential items in the cozy atmosphere of a lakeside resort.
The main shopping activity is concentrated in the city center, primarily on Hauptstrasse and its adjacent side streets. Strolling here, tourists will find many small clothing boutiques, shoe stores, bookstores, and pharmacies. Traditional bakeries and confectioneries add a special charm to this area, with the aroma of fresh pastries inviting you to take a break from shopping.
There are no giant shopping and entertainment complexes in Rorschach typical of large cities. The needs of locals and tourists are met by chain department stores and supermarkets (such as Coop or Migros) located in the center. Here you can buy groceries, Swiss chocolate, cosmetics, and household goods. For larger-scale shopping, locals usually head to neighboring St. Gallen, which is only a 15–20 minute journey away.
The city markets, which are an important part of local culture, deserve special attention. The weekly market (Wochenmarkt), which usually takes place in the central square on Saturdays (during the warmer months), offers the best regional products. Here you can buy fresh fish from Lake Constance, farm cheeses, seasonal fruits, vegetables, and flowers. This is the best place to get a true taste of the region.
As souvenirs from Rorschach, it is worth bringing back something authentic. Since the city is in the Canton of St. Gallen, look out for items made from the famous St. Gallen lace and textiles—they are exquisite and precious gifts. Gastronomic souvenirs are also popular: be sure to buy a local "Biber" gingerbread with almond filling, Swiss cheese, and, of course, chocolate. In the souvenir shops by the harbour, you can find items with nautical themes and Lake Constance symbols.
When planning your purchases, keep the operating hours in mind. Shops in Rorschach are usually open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 18:30, sometimes with a lunch break in small shops. On Saturday, the working day is shorter—most places close as early as 16:00 or 17:00. Sunday is a day off for all trade, except for small shops at the railway station where you can buy essential groceries. Bank cards are accepted almost everywhere, but at the market and in small kiosks, it's better to have cash francs with you.
Tourists residing outside the country can use the Tax Free system. If your purchase amount in one store exceeds 300 Swiss francs (CHF), you are entitled to a VAT refund. Be sure to ask the seller to issue a special check (Tax Free Form) and present it along with your passport and the goods when leaving the country at customs.
