Overview

The climate in Ayutthaya, Thailand, is characterized as tropical monsoon. This means it is warm year-round, with distinct wet and dry seasons. Temperature fluctuations throughout the year are minimal, which is typical for the tropics; however, several periods with different weather conditions can be identified.

The city has several main weather periods. The hot and dry season usually falls in March and April. During this time, temperatures reach their maximum, often exceeding 35°C, while rainfall remains low. May serves as a transitional month: the heat persists, but the number of rainy days and the volume of precipitation increase significantly, heralding the arrival of the rainy season. This wet period lasts roughly from June to October, bringing the highest amount of rainfall—especially in August and September—and is accompanied by high humidity. From November to February, Ayutthaya experiences a cooler and drier season, which many consider the most comfortable for visiting: temperatures drop slightly, and rain becomes a rare occurrence.

Therefore, when planning a trip to Ayutthaya, it is important to consider these seasonal characteristics. It is always warm here, but rainfall and humidity levels can vary significantly depending on the time of year. The most stable and dry weather is typically observed from December to February, while refreshing tropical showers are highly likely from May to October.

Temperature

The climate in Ayutthaya is tropical, characterized by high temperatures throughout the year. The annual range of average temperatures is small: from 26.6°C in December to a peak of 31.4°C in April. April is traditionally considered the hottest month, when the average maximum air temperature reaches 36.3°C, and the average daily temperature stays around 31.4°C. The "coolest" month is December, with an average temperature of 26.6°C and an average minimum night temperature of about 21.8°C, which nevertheless remains very warm compared to temperate latitudes.

The period from March to October can be characterized as hot and humid. The most sweltering months are March, April, and May, when daytime temperatures regularly rise above 35°C (up to 36.3°C in April), and nights remain very warm (25.3°C - 26.8°C). From June to September, during the rainy season, daytime temperatures drop slightly (averaging 32-34°C), but high humidity keeps it feeling hot. Nighttime temperatures during these months also remain high, around 25-26°C. Fluctuations between daytime and nighttime temperatures are most noticeable in the dry months (for example, in January the difference is about 10.6°C), while in the rainy season, this difference is somewhat smaller due to increased cloud cover and humidity.

The so-called "winter" or dry season, which lasts from November to February, offers the most comfortable weather conditions for visiting Ayutthaya. During this time, daytime temperatures are usually within 31.5°C - 33.7°C, and nights bring a pleasant coolness, especially in December and January, when minimum temperatures drop to 21.8°C - 21.9°C. This creates favorable conditions for sightseeing and long walks, as the heat is easier to bear and rainfall is minimal (0-1 mm per month).

Precipitation

Ayutthaya experiences a pronounced seasonality in rainfall, with a clear division between the dry period and the rainy season. Understanding these climate cycles will help you better prepare for your trip.

The dry season in Ayutthaya usually sets in from November and lasts through March. During this time, rain is a rare occurrence. The driest months are January and December, when the average monthly rainfall is 0 mm, and the number of rainy days does not exceed two. Predominantly dry weather also continues through February (1 mm of rainfall, 4 rainy days) and March (1 mm of rainfall, 7 rainy days). November, with 2 mm of precipitation and about 8 rainy days, is transitional to the dry season.

The rainy season in Ayutthaya spans from May to October, although April (3 mm of rainfall, 13 rainy days) can be seen as the start of this wet period. The highest intensity and frequency of precipitation are observed in September: an average of 9 mm of rain falls, and the number of rainy days reaches 26. August is also a very wet month with 6 mm of rainfall and 26 rainy days. In July, rain occurs frequently, about 25 days, bringing around 6 mm of precipitation. During these months, it is worth being prepared for frequent, though—based on the total volume—not always prolonged rainfall.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Ayutthaya, it is important to consider its tropical climate: it is hot all year round, with average temperatures ranging from 27°C to 31°C. The foundation of your wardrobe should be light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen. Since you will be doing a lot of walking while exploring ancient temples and ruins, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity. Don't forget sun protection either: high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat will help you handle the heat comfortably and avoid sunburn.

Ayutthaya has two distinct seasons defined by rainfall. The dry season usually lasts from December to March. During this time, rain is very rare (0-1 mm of precipitation per month), so you will be comfortable in your lightest summer clothes. From May to October, the rainy season arrives, when rainfall increases significantly, peaking at up to 9 mm in September and with the highest number of rainy days (up to 26 per month), especially between July and September. During this time of year, remember to bring a light raincoat or a compact umbrella, as well as clothes made from quick-drying fabrics. April is the hottest month preceding the rainy season, while November is a transitional period with decreasing rainfall.

Regardless of the season, always carry insect repellent, especially if you plan to walk in the evening or near bodies of water. It is also recommended to have a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated in the hot weather. While layering for warmth isn't very relevant here due to the consistently high temperatures, a light wrap or pashmina can be useful for visiting temples where a dress code is required (covered shoulders and knees) or for protection against the cool air from indoor air conditioning.
