Maenam Beach

About

If you are looking for the perfect balance between pristine nature and comfort, Maenam Beach will be a true discovery. It is one of the longest and most picturesque beaches on the island of Koh Samui, famous for its peaceful atmosphere. Unlike noisy tourist centers, silence reigns here, and the coastline is adorned with spreading palm trees leaning toward the water itself.

The beach surface is covered with coarse yellow sand, which in its texture resembles sugar. Walking on it is a special pleasure, although your feet may sink slightly into the soft mass. In Thailand, it is hard to find a place more suitable for a family holiday: the entry into the water here is very smooth and shallow, without sharp corals or stones, which makes swimming safe even for the youngest travelers.

The sea in this part of the island is usually calm, like a mirror, and the depth increases gradually, allowing you to enjoy swimming without strong waves. Despite the fact that cozy hotels and restaurants are located along the shore, Maenam remains a quiet and uncrowded place, where you can always find a secluded corner under the shade of coconut palms.

What to Do

The main reason to visit this beach is for absolute relaxation. Here you can swim for hours in calm water without fear of strong currents, or practice yoga and meditation to the sound of the surf. The clean sandy bottom is ideal for diving right from the shore, and snorkeling enthusiasts can observe the life of small crustaceans in the clear water.

Walking along the water's edge is another popular activity. Thanks to the long length of the beach, you will always find new angles for photos, especially in the western part where colorful bars are located. In one of these establishments, you can try authentic pad thai or fresh grilled fish while watching the sun slowly dip below the horizon, painting the sky in fantastic colors.

If you want to vary your beach leisure, you can go to see nearby temples or book a boat trip. During the summer months, the sea here remains consistently comfortable, which favorably distinguishes this location from other beaches on the island that are subject to strong low tides and storms. This place is designed for those who appreciate the simple joys of life: a good book in the shade of a palm tree, the warm sea, and delicious local food.

Getting There

Getting to this picturesque corner in the northwest of the island is quite easy. The beach is located in the Mae Nam area, about 11 kilometers from Nathon and the neighboring Bophut beach. The most popular way to get around here is by rented bike or taxi. Also, songthaews (local open-air buses) regularly run along the ring road, from which you can reach the water's edge on foot in just a few minutes.

The drive from Samui Airport takes about 20–30 minutes by car. If you are arriving on the island by ferry at the port of Nathon or Surat Thani, you can easily find a transfer to Mae Nam. Signs for major hotels or the turn towards Chinatown (Hutcha Resort) can serve as landmarks for turning off the main road.

For those who prefer walking, the beach is accessible from neighboring resorts, such as from Escape Beach Resort. However, for complete freedom of movement around the island and to visit remote parts of the coast, it is best to rent your own transport, as parking spaces are provided at almost every beach entrance.

History & Facts

This part of the coast is snugly situated in the northern part of the island in the Gulf of Thailand of the Pacific Ocean. The location owes its name to the settlement of the same name, Ban Mae Nam. One of the geographical features is that three small rivers flow into the sea in the central part. This is why the water near their mouths can be slightly less transparent than along the rest of the shore.

Despite the natural origin of debris that is sometimes washed ashore after storms, local services and hotel staff promptly monitor the cleanliness of the sand. Interestingly, the tides here are significantly weaker than on many other beaches of the island: the sea recedes by only 5–7 meters, maintaining comfortable swimming conditions at almost any time of day.

As of early 2025, this place firmly holds its position in global tourism rankings. It took an honorable 4th place in the "World's Best Beaches" list with an impressive score of 9.3 out of 10. Travelers appreciate it for preserving its pristine tropical landscape and the opportunity to relax in silence, which is becoming a rarity for popular resort destinations.

Time Needed

To simply get to know the coastline, take a swim, and have a bite to eat at one of the local cafes, you will need about 3–6 hours. This is quite enough time to walk the entire length of the shore, find the most picturesque spot under a palm tree, and enjoy the calm water.

However, many travelers prefer to come here for the whole day to catch both the morning calm and the magnificent sunset. If your goal is a complete reset and a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, it is worth considering staying in one of the local hotels for a few days, as the atmosphere here encourages a leisurely pace of life.

Working Hours

As a natural site, the beach is available for visiting 24/7. You can come here at dawn or late in the evening to enjoy the starry sky over the Gulf of Thailand.

Beachfront restaurants, bars, and rental points usually open around 9:00–10:00 AM and work until late in the evening (until 9:00–10:00 PM). The operating schedule of specific establishments may change depending on the season, so before visiting a specific restaurant, it is recommended to check the information on its official website or social media pages.

Nearby

Exploring the surroundings beyond the beach strip will help make your holiday more fulfilling and interesting. The Mae Nam area and neighboring settlements offer both active water activities and cozy villas for a secluded getaway.
