General Weather Overview

Sivas has a predominantly continental climate, characterized by significant temperature contrasts and four distinct seasons. Visitors to the city should expect cold, snowy winters and warm, sometimes hot, dry summers. This climate makes Sivas an attractive destination to visit at different times of the year, depending on the type of holiday you prefer.

The winter months, from December to February, are the coldest, with average temperatures remaining below freezing. Spring, especially from March to May, is a transitional period with gradual warming but also the highest number of rainy days. Summer, particularly July and August, is the warmest and sunniest time of the year. During these months, precipitation is minimal, and air temperatures can rise to +27°C, creating excellent conditions for sightseeing. Autumn brings pleasant coolness and a gradual drop in temperature before the onset of winter.

Temperature

The climate in Sivas is distinguished by clearly defined seasons and significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year, which is typical for a continental climate. Winters here are cold, while summers are warm and dry. The frostiest months are January and February, when the average temperature consistently stays below freezing. The hottest period falls in July and August, when the average daily temperature reaches its peak.

Cold weather sets in during winter in Sivas. From December to February, average night temperatures drop to -4°C...-7°C, while daytime highs rarely rise above 1-4°C. Spring arrives gradually: while March is still cool with an average temperature of about 2°C, by May the air warms up to a comfortable 18°C during the day, although nights remain fresh.

Summer in Sivas delights with warm and predominantly dry weather. In July and August, daytime temperatures rise on average to 25-27°C. A characteristic feature of the local climate is the substantial difference between day and night temperatures: after a hot day, evenings and nights bring pleasant coolness as the thermometer drops to 12-14°C. In autumn, September still retains comfortable warmth, but rapid cooling occurs in October and November, preparing the city for the arrival of winter.

Precipitation

The climate in the city of Sivas is characterized by clearly defined wet and dry seasons. The driest time of the year is summer. In July and August, precipitation is practically absent, and the number of rainy days is minimal — only 2-3 for the entire month. This is the ideal time for those who prefer dry and sunny weather.

The main volume of precipitation falls during the spring months. March and May are the wettest in the year, averaging 16 days with precipitation each. Rain prevails during this period. In autumn, the amount of precipitation gradually increases: after a dry September, the number of rainy days grows again in October and November.

Winter in Sivas is cold, and precipitation from December to February, and sometimes in March, often falls as snow due to stable freezing temperatures. Although the total amount of precipitation in millimetres is not large, it is distributed over a significant number of days. For example, in January there are about 13 snowy or rainy days, which creates a stable snow cover.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Sivas, it is important to consider its continental climate with distinct seasons, which directly influences wardrobe choices. Winters (December-February) are cold here, with average temperatures often dropping below freezing and minimums reaching -6.5°C. You will need very warm items: thermal underwear, an insulated jacket, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Despite the small amount of precipitation (about 2 mm per month), the number of days with it can reach 13, so light waterproof outerwear or a compact umbrella will be useful for protection against wet snow or drizzle.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) in Sivas are transitional periods with noticeable temperature fluctuations. While March is still cool (average temperature around 2°C), May offers a comfortable 12°C. In autumn, September pleases with warmth (average 17°C), but by November the temperature drops to 5°C. In these seasons, the principle of layering is the ideal solution: t-shirts, shirts, sweaters, and cardigans that can be combined depending on the weather. Do not forget a mid-season jacket, preferably with wind and moisture protection, as spring can have up to 16 days with precipitation, albeit not heavy. Comfortable trousers or jeans will also be appropriate.

Summer in Sivas (June-August) is warm and mostly dry, with average temperatures ranging from 16°C to 20°C, and maximums reaching 27°C. July and August are the driest months, with practically no rainfall. For a summer trip, choose light, breathable clothing: t-shirts, shorts, dresses, and sundresses made from natural fabrics. Be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect against the bright sun. Even in summer, evenings can be a bit cool, so a light sweater or jacket won't go amiss. And, of course, regardless of the time of year, comfortable walking shoes are your main companion for exploring the city and its surroundings.
