Aldershot Military Museum

About

Housed in Victorian-era brick barracks, the Aldershot Military Museum is a unique portal into the past of the "Home of the British Army." Located in the North Camp area of Farnborough, this site represents the only surviving example of 1890s barrack architecture. The museum tells the fascinating story of the military garrison and the civilian population of the region from the mid-19th century to the present day.

The museum's exhibition in Great Britain is spread across four historic buildings with Grade II listed status. Here, the daily lives of soldiers and officers come to life: through realistic reconstructions of living quarters, displays of uniforms, and personal items, visitors can experience the atmosphere of army life through different decades.

Beyond purely military themes, the museum serves as a local history center for the Borough of Rushmoor, highlighting the development of local industry and important milestones in aviation history. Managed by the Hampshire Cultural Trust, it offers an educational day out for the whole family, blending historical facts with interactive elements and visual exhibits.

What to Do

At this museum, history literally comes to life in your hands: visitors are allowed to handle deactivated rifles used by British soldiers over a hundred years ago. Technology enthusiasts will be delighted by the outdoor and hangar collections, featuring legendary Chieftain and Challenger tanks, as well as a faithful companion of World War II troops—a 1943 Willys Jeep. For more active visitors, there is a special retro-style obstacle course.

The themed galleries with interior reconstructions deserve special attention. You can peer into a Victorian barrack, compare it with a 1950s soldier's room, or see how military families lived in the 1960s. In the interactive zone, you can even try your hand as a scout car driver by practicing on a special military vehicle driving simulator.

For those interested in the skies, the Cody Gallery is a must-visit. It features a recreation of the workshop of the famous aviator Samuel Cody and houses his original helmet—a witness to the first flight in Britain. After exploring the exhibits, you can stop by the gift shop, which offers an excellent selection of history books, themed toys, and souvenirs.

History & Facts

The Aldershot Military Museum opened its doors in 1984, officially inaugurated by the Duke of Gloucester. The creation of this site was made possible thanks to the initiative of Brigadier John Read, who sought to preserve the memory of the region's military past. The museum is housed in the unique North Camp brick barracks, built in the 1890s.

The exposition covers a vast period of time, starting from 1854 when the military camp began to form. One of the central themes is the history of aviation. It was in Farnborough in 1908 that aviation pioneer Samuel Franklin Cody made the first official powered, piloted flight in a heavier-than-air machine in British history. The museum has carefully recreated his workshop, where you can see the inventor's personal belongings.

A highlight of the museum is the Montgomery Barn. This building was constructed in 1947 specifically to house the caravans of the famous Field Marshal Montgomery. In 1996, the structure was moved to the museum grounds, and today it serves as a home for a collection of heavy military vehicles. The museum's archives also contain rare photographs, maps, and documents dating back to the mid-19th century.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the exhibits, study the collection of armored vehicles, and get acquainted with the daily lives of soldiers from different eras, you will typically need about 2–3 hours. This is enough time to visit the galleries, look into Cody’s workshop, and let children try their hand at the obstacle course.

If you plan to study archival documents in detail or participate in special interactive programs often held on weekends, you should set aside half a day for your visit. The museum is quite compact but packed with interesting details that deserve your attention.

Working Hours

The museum is usually open to visitors from Thursday to Sunday, with opening hours from 10:00 to 16:00. The exhibition is also accessible on Mondays if they are public holidays (Bank Holidays). During school holidays in Hampshire and Surrey, the museum often switches to daily operations.

Please note that the museum is closed on January 1st, Easter Sunday, and during the Christmas period from December 24th to 26th. It is recommended to check the information on the official website before your trip, as the schedule may change depending on current exhibitions and events.
