The railway is built on the grounds of a former gravel pit, which has been transformed into a lush oasis featuring several lakes. The route, approximately 1.5 km long, runs between two stations and includes the longest tunnel found on any miniature railway in Britain. Visitors can enjoy rides on trains pulled by both powerful steam and modern diesel locomotives.

Thanks to its high reputation and diverse rolling stock, the railway attracts not only families with children but also serious rail enthusiasts. Recent updates, including the addition of a mini-golf course, have turned this location into a complete outdoor family leisure destination.

What to Do

The highlight of your visit will be a ride in open or enclosed carriages pulled by genuine miniature steam locomotives, such as the legendary "The Monarch" or "Cunard White Star." The journey lasts about 20 minutes, during which you can enjoy views of the lakes and parkland while passing through the famous long tunnel.

Be sure to make a stop at the Monks Brook intermediate station. It is located next to a large children's play area, making it an ideal spot for a break if you are traveling with young children. After your break, you can return to the main station on a later train using the same ticket.

In addition to the railway, the site features a 9-hole mini-golf course that opened in 2025. Visitors can also watch engineers at work in the Parkway station depot or visit the local cafe, which serves traditional English snacks. The walking trails around the lakes are a perfect complement to the technical side of the excursion.

Getting There

The railway is located within Lakeside Country Park and is most easily reached by car. The site is situated in close proximity to the M3 (junction 13) and M27 motorways. Ample free parking is provided for visitors within the park, making travel by private vehicle very convenient.

If you plan to use public transport, head for the Eastleigh railway station. From there, you can reach the park by taxi or local bus in just 10 minutes. Walking enthusiasts can reach the park from Eastleigh town center in about 30–40 minutes via scenic footpaths.

It is also worth noting the proximity to Southampton Airport, which is about a 15-minute drive from the railway. This makes the attraction an excellent option for a short stop while traveling through the region.

History & Facts

The history of this unique site began in 1992 thanks to the initiative of Clive Upton. Initially, the miniature railway was a private hobby in the founder's garden, but the project soon gained the support of the local council, and a temporary track was opened at Lakeside Country Park on the site of a former gravel pit.

The attraction's popularity grew rapidly, leading to a long-term lease by the late 1990s and the construction of permanent stations at Parkway and Monks Brook. In 2003, a tunnel was added to the line, which, after expansion in 2012, became the longest of any miniature railway in the United Kingdom.

In 2025, the railway changed ownership and was acquired by the Seaside Railway Group. The new management has preserved the historic fleet of locomotives, including the famous "Sandy River," and expanded the range of entertainment by adding a mini-golf course, continuing to develop the site as a key center for family leisure in Hampshire.

Time Needed

A standard visit to the Eastleigh Lakeside Steam Railway usually takes about 1–2 hours. This is enough time to enjoy a trip along the main route, take photos with the vintage locomotives, and visit the cozy cafe at Parkway station.

If you plan to combine the train ride with a walk through the lakeside park, a game of mini-golf, or a visit to the playground at Monks Brook station, we recommend allowing about 3 hours. This will let you enjoy the peaceful English countryside atmosphere without any rush.

Working Hours

The attraction is open to visitors daily, from Monday to Sunday inclusive. Operating hours are from 10:00 to 16:30, making it easy to plan a visit for either the morning or afternoon.

Please note that the operation of steam locomotives may depend on weather conditions and technical requirements. During school holidays and public holidays, special themed events may be held, so it is recommended to check the current schedule on the official website before visiting.
