The core concept revolves around freshness and authenticity: they serve legendary paninis on artisanal bread from Fazio Bakery, signature soups, and nutrient-rich salads. However, State Street Market is about more than just food; it features an impressive wine cellar with over 125 varieties, which can be enjoyed during dinner or purchased to go. The interior, blending loft elements with a cozy boutique feel, creates the perfect backdrop for romantic dates or family brunches.

It is worth noting that in 2025, the project underwent a major transformation, moving to a historic building in the neighboring village of Elsah under the updated name State Street on LaSalle. Despite the change in location, the establishment has retained its unique charm, its famous copper bar, and the high standards of service confirmed by an impressive trust rating from travelers and locals alike.

What to Do

A visit to State Street Market is, first and foremost, a gastronomic journey. Be sure to start with a wine tasting: the local collection is considered one of the best in the region, and the experienced staff is always ready to help you find the perfect vintage for your mood. If you stop by during the day, don't miss the chance to try the signature quiche or one of the organic salads made with the freshest ingredients.

The centerpiece of the interior and a major draw is the famous Copper Bar. Here, you can watch the skillful work of the bartenders while ordering signature cocktails or craft beer. During the warmer months, relaxing on the outdoor terrace is a special pleasure, offering views of picturesque streets that evoke classic Americana. For those seeking a more intimate setting, there is a cozy boutique dining room, perfect for a romantic dinner.

If your visit falls on a Saturday or Sunday, be sure to book a table for brunch. This is the time for Bloody Marys, mimosas, and exquisite brioche French toast. Before leaving, browse the retail section: the selection of wines and gourmet delicacies allows you to take a piece of the atmosphere home with you or pick up an elegant gift for loved ones.

Getting There

Until recently, the market was located at 208 State St in the heart of Alton. However, the main attraction has now moved just a 15-minute drive (about 13 kilometers) upriver. The route follows the scenic Great River Road, a landmark in its own right thanks to its breathtaking views of the Mississippi River.

For those traveling by car from St. Louis, the drive takes about 30–40 minutes. In the village of Elsah, there are several parking options: a dedicated lot on Mill Street, from which a short, pleasant trail leads to the restaurant, as well as street parking directly on LaSalle Street. Public transport is limited in this area, so renting a car or taking a taxi is the most convenient way to get around.

If you decide to take a taxi from downtown Alton, the ride is short and comfortable. When using navigation apps, be sure to enter the new address in Elsah to arrive at the updated space featuring the famous copper bar.

History & Facts

The story of State Street Market began in July 2015 when it was opened by Cary Lockwood. It was soon acquired by Terry and Glenn "Bo" Beaubien, experienced restaurateurs who brought their passion for hospitality to the project. Over nine years in Alton, the market became a true symbol of resilience, successfully weathering six major floods and a pandemic while remaining faithful to its high quality and cozy atmosphere.

A significant turning point came in 2024 when, due to leasing challenges, the owners made the bold decision to relocate. On December 31, 2024, the legendary Alton location closed its doors to be reborn in an even more atmospheric setting—an 1894 historic building in the nearby village of Elsah. Previously known as Elsah Landing, the building preserves an antique spirit that perfectly complements the "market" concept.

A curious fact: the move to Elsah was a historic event for the village itself. State Street on LaSalle became the first establishment with a full-service bar in a community that had long maintained a "dry" status. Elsah residents warmly welcomed the restaurateurs, seeing them as an opportunity to breathe new life into the historic center and attract tourists traveling along the Great River Road.

Today, the establishment continues the traditions established in Alton, including its famous wine collection, which was repeatedly voted the best in the Riverbend region between 2018 and 2021. The relocation of the original copper bar to the new building symbolizes continuity and the preservation of the very soul that guests have come to love.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the atmosphere of the establishment, it usually takes 1 to 2 hours if you are planning a light lunch or brunch. This is enough time to appreciate the freshness of the local ingredients and select a bottle of wine from the retail section.

If your goal is a full dinner with wine tasting or a leisurely evening at the copper bar, you should set aside about 2–3 hours. This is especially true for weekends, when the atmosphere encourages long conversations accompanied by signature cocktails and seasonal dishes.

Working Hours

The operating hours at the new location (State Street on LaSalle) are designed to welcome guests on both weekdays and weekends. Typically, the restaurant is open from Wednesday to Sunday. On Wednesday and Thursday, doors are open from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM; on Friday and Saturday, until 10:00 PM; and Sunday is dedicated to leisurely brunches until mid-afternoon.

Please note that the kitchen usually stops taking orders an hour before closing, and advance reservations are highly recommended for popular brunch and dinner times. Since the schedule may change during holidays, it is best to check the current hours on the official website or by phone before your visit.

Nearby

A stroll through the surrounding area after visiting the market will allow you to further immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this historic region. Alton and its environs are famous for cozy pubs, architectural landmarks, and scenic river views that are particularly beautiful at sunset.
