Overview. Shopping in Clearlake is more practical and relaxed than entertainment-oriented. You won't find luxury boutiques or huge multi-story malls with global fashion brands here. Local trade is focused on the comfort of residents and the needs of vacationers coming to the lake. The main range of products in stores includes outdoor gear, fishing tackle, food, and essentials. Nevertheless, fans of unique finds can discover interesting items in local antique shops and small private stores.
Main Shopping Areas and Streets. The city's main commercial artery is Olympic Drive. This is where most of Clearlake's commercial life is concentrated: from large chain supermarkets to pharmacies and auto parts stores. If you need to buy groceries for a picnic or pick up items forgotten at home, this is the place to go. Another important area is Lakeshore Drive, which runs along the lake. Here, the atmosphere is more resort-like: there are small shops with souvenirs, fishing gear, and home goods where you can find something more authentic.
Shopping Centers. There are no large indoor malls in the traditional sense in the city. The main format of trade is open shopping complexes (strip malls). One of the key locations is the Clearlake Shopping Center on Olympic Drive. This is a convenient location with a large parking lot, housing grocery supermarkets, household goods stores, and fast-food outlets. Tourists often stop here to restock before a trip into nature or to a campground.
Markets. Farmers' markets are an important part of the local culture, allowing you to appreciate the agricultural wealth of California. During the season (usually from May to October), sites operate in and around the city where local farmers sell fresh vegetables, fruits, homemade honey, and nuts. This is a great opportunity to buy organic products straight from the farm. "Flea markets" and garage sales are also popular in the region, where real vintage treasures can sometimes be found among second-hand items.
Souvenirs. From a trip to Clearlake, it's worth bringing back items that reflect the spirit of this lake region. First and foremost, this is local wine: Lake County is famous for its vineyards, and a bottle of high-quality Sauvignon Blanc or Cabernet makes an excellent gift. The second popular souvenir is fishing tackle. Since the city is called the "bass fishing capital," specialized stores offer unique lures and equipment that anglers will appreciate. Also popular are local handicrafts, antiques, and walnut products, which are grown in this region.
Opening Hours and Payment. Large chain stores and supermarkets are usually open from 8:00–9:00 AM to 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM, operating daily. Small private shops and boutiques often close earlier — around 5:00–6:00 PM — and may have shortened hours or be closed on Sundays. Bank cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) are accepted everywhere in the USA, even for small purchases. Cash might only be needed at farmers' markets or when buying souvenirs at street fairs.
Sales Tax. Tourists should remember that in the US, sales tax is not included in the price shown on the tag and is added to the total at the checkout. In California, the tax rate is quite high and varies by county and city (averaging around 7.25% and higher). A Tax-Free refund system for international tourists, similar to the European one, practically does not exist here, so you should not count on a VAT refund when leaving the country.
