How to get to Duluth

Situated on the scenic shores of Lake Superior, Duluth is a significant port city and a popular tourist destination in the state of Minnesota. This location combines industrial history with natural beauty, attracting travellers eager to explore the North Shore.

You can reach the city in various ways, making it accessible for guests from any point in the USA. You can arrive by plane, take an intercity bus, or enjoy a road trip by car while admiring the views of the Midwest.

The fastest way to reach the city is by air. Travellers are served by Duluth International Airport (DLH), which provides convenient connections to the outside world for hundreds of thousands of passengers annually.

If a direct flight is not available, you can consider flights to neighbouring regional airports. The nearest options include the city of Hibbing (95 km) and Ironwood (153 km), as well as Brainerd (168 km), from where the rest of the journey can be completed by ground transport.

Currently, the city of Duluth does not have an active railway station for long-distance passenger trains. Direct rail service to the city is not available, so tourists must use combined routes.

The nearest major Amtrak stations are located in other cities within the state (for example, in St. Paul or St. Cloud). From there, travellers need to transfer to intercity buses or rent a car to cover the remaining distance to the coast of Lake Superior.

Bus services connect the region with neighbouring settlements, offering an affordable travel option. The route from the city of Hibbing (about 150 km) will take approximately 2.5 hours, while the journey from the city of Ironwood (176 km) will require about 2.6 hours.

It is worth noting that the trip from the city of Brainerd can be very long due to complex logistics and transfers. Despite the geographical proximity, the bus route often detours through major hubs, stretching to 537 km and taking more than 14 hours.

Travelling by car offers you freedom of movement and the opportunity to enjoy the landscapes of Minnesota. The shortest trip awaits you from the city of Hibbing: the distance of 121 km can be comfortably covered in just 1.4 hours.

The drive from the cities of Ironwood and Brainerd will take approximately the same amount of time — about 2.0 hours. The distance in both cases is around 173–183 km, making the drive easy and stress-free even for drivers with limited experience.
