It is a place where roasting expertise meets island hospitality.

Founders Brian and Lindsey Burick created more than just a business; they built a platform for learning. What to Do

At Tradition Coffee Roasters, visitors can expect a rich selection of drinks and experiences. You can order a classic latte or opt for a Hawaiian pour-over, which perfectly unlocks the flavor profile of the beans. The retail section features about a dozen varieties, including the famous 100% Kona, exotic Honduras Peaberry, and a smooth Swiss Water Process decaf.

The shop's signature blends deserve special attention. For instance, the "Firehouse Blend" delights with notes of caramelized sugar and cocoa, paying homage to the founder's past, while the "Aloha Blend" harmoniously combines beans from the Ka'u region with the best samples from Central and South America. You can enjoy your coffee on-site or purchase a freshly roasted bag as the perfect Oahu souvenir.

For those looking to deepen their knowledge, the café offers educational classes. They host workshops on coffee tasting (cupping), pour-over techniques, and even the basics of home roasting. It is a great opportunity to get a "behind-the-scenes" look at the process and understand how the principles of chemistry and thermodynamics influence the taste of every cup you enjoy.

Getting There

You can find Tradition Coffee Roasters in the Kailua area on the island of Oahu. The roastery is located in an industrial zone near the Kapa'a Quarry and the Kawainui Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary. The building is surrounded by other craft businesses, including a winery and a distillery.

The most convenient way to reach the location is by car or taxi. If you are driving from the center of Kaneohe, the trip will take about 10–15 minutes. While driving along the Kalanianaʻole Highway, keep a close eye on the signs after passing the commercial transport zone near Kapa'a Quarry Road so you don't miss the turn-off to the industrial cluster.

Public transport to this area is less frequent, so tourists are often advised to use ride-sharing services or a taxi directly to the door. Parking is usually available for visitors right next to the roastery.

History & Facts

The history of Tradition Coffee Roasters is inextricably linked to its founder, Brian Burick. Before dedicating himself to the art of coffee in the USA on Hawaii, Brian served as a firefighter in New York for 21 years, retiring as an FDNY lieutenant. Interestingly, his journey into professional roasting began at the firehouse, where strong coffee was a vital necessity for staying alert during long shifts.

True inspiration struck Brian during a trip to Italy. After tasting an espresso there with distinct notes of milk chocolate, he realized that coffee could be a true work of art. Upon returning home, he began to study roasting processes in depth, attending specialized courses and experimenting with beans. His background in fire science unexpectedly came in handy for his new venture: his knowledge of thermodynamics and chemistry helped him master the thermal processing of coffee beans.

Together with his wife Lindsey, who previously worked on Wall Street, Brian moved to Hawaii—the home of Lindsey's mother. In 2019, they officially launched their project, which started as a private coffee club and wholesale supplier before growing into one of the most respected craft roasteries on the island of Oahu.

Time Needed

For a standard visit to Tradition Coffee Roasters, 1–2 hours is usually sufficient. This is enough time to leisurely enjoy a cup of fresh pour-over, try some signature treats, and browse the selection of coffee beans to take home.

If you plan to participate in educational events or cupping sessions, you should allow for a bit more time in your schedule. Given the proximity to a local winery and distillery, many tourists prefer to set aside half a day to explore this culinary cluster on the outskirts of Kaneohe.
