Travelling through Van Nuys Airport (VNY) is an experience radically different from departing from a large international hub. Since the airport specialises in private and business aviation, the standard rules of "arriving three hours early" do not apply here; however, there are nuances of etiquette and logistics that will make your trip flawless.
Optimal Arrival Time
The main advantage of private aviation is saving time. You do not need to arrive 2–3 hours before departure.
- For Domestic Flights: It is optimal to arrive at the terminal (FBO) 15–20 minutes before the scheduled departure time. This is sufficient to meet the pilot, hand over luggage, and proceed to the aircraft.
- For International Flights: It is recommended to arrive 30–45 minutes in advance, as passport and visa checks will be required before boarding.
- Important: Although the aircraft often waits for the passenger, the crew has strict takeoff time slots. A passenger's lateness can lead to losing the takeoff slot and delaying the flight indefinitely, so punctuality here is a sign of respect.
Check-in and Security: No Queues or Removing Shoes
Van Nuys lacks TSA terminals with metal detector frames and body scanners.
- Documents: Always have your original identification document (passport or ID) with you, even for domestic flights. Pilots are obliged to verify your details against the flight manifest.
- Screening: The procedure happens discreetly. The crew or terminal security service may ask to inspect luggage, but you will not have to take out laptops or remove your belt.
- Vehicle: Check with your broker in advance about the possibility of the ramp access service. If your car number is given to security beforehand, you will be able to drive through the gates directly to the aircraft steps, where a valet will take the car to parking.
Hand Luggage and Baggage: What is Allowed
Liquid transport rules ("the 100 ml rule") do not apply in private aviation. You can freely bring your favourite beverages, cosmetics, and perfumes on board in any volume. However, there are technical limitations:
- Luggage Compartment Size: Private jets, especially Light Jets, have limited luggage compartments. If you plan to carry non-standard cargo (golf clubs, skis, large hard suitcases), be sure to inform the broker at the aircraft booking stage. Otherwise, the luggage may physically not fit.
- Pets: Van Nuys is very pet-friendly. Cats and dogs can fly in the cabin with you without cages, but this also needs to be notified in advance to arrange the appropriate documents.
Choosing a Seat on the Plane
The concept of "seat check-in" does not exist here. Seating in the cabin is usually free.
- Configuration: If you are flying with colleagues or family, study the cabin layout in advance. Seats are often arranged in a "club" format (facing each other). If you need to work or sleep, take a seat at a table or on a divan if provided by the jet's design.
- VIP Seat: The seat on the starboard side by the window, immediately behind the cockpit, is often considered the most prestigious ("owner's seat"), as it offers the best view and control of entertainment systems.
Tips for Transit Passengers
Van Nuys does not have direct connections with commercial airports. If you arrive here on a private jet to transfer to a scheduled flight (for example, to Europe or Asia):
- Logistics: Allow a minimum of 2 hours for the transfer to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) by ground. Traffic in Los Angeles is unpredictable.
- Helicopter Transfer: To save time and nerves, you can book a helicopter transfer from VNY to LAX. This will take just 15 minutes.
Customs Control (For International Flights)
Arriving at Van Nuys from abroad (for example, from Mexico or Canada), you will pass customs in a special FBO zone or directly on board the aircraft.
- Procedure: Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers will approach the aircraft. You do not need to stand in a general queue. Simply wait for the officer's permission before leaving the board.
- Declarations: Rules for importing currency (over $10,000) and food products (fruit, meat) are just as strict as in ordinary airports. Fines for an undeclared apple can be substantial.
How to Save Time and Money
- Empty Legs: If your schedule is flexible, ask operators about flights via the Empty Legs system (repositioning flights). Departing from Van Nuys on such a flight can cost 50–70% cheaper than a regular charter.
- FlyAway Parking: If you live in the San Fernando Valley and are flying from LAX, use the FlyAway parking at Van Nuys. It is significantly cheaper than leaving a car at the main Los Angeles airport, and the bus will take you directly to the required terminal without the stress of driving in traffic jams.
What to Do in Case of Delay
Delays in business aviation are most often related to weather conditions or air traffic control (ATC) restrictions.
- Comfort: Do not sit in the plane. Return to the FBO lounge. There is Wi-Fi, beverages, and comfortable armchairs there. Pilots will inform you as soon as they receive permission to take off.
- Connectivity: Use the waiting time effectively. Most terminals provide meeting rooms where you can hold a meeting or call in complete silence until the weather improves.
