The establishment gained fame for its authentic cuisine based on old Peirano family recipes. The cafe's significance is cemented by the prestigious James Beard Award it received in 2014, placing it alongside America's most outstanding classic restaurants. A cozy, home-like atmosphere reigns here, closely intertwined with the history of the Willamette Valley.

Today, the revamped Nick's Italian Café 2.0 continues to delight guests with classic dishes like homemade pasta and wood-fired pizza. Adding to the charm is the Refire Bar tucked away in the back, where you can feel the informal rhythm of the city and meet local winemakers over a glass of excellent local wine.

What to Do

The main reason to visit Nick's Italian Café is, undoubtedly, the food. Be sure to try the famous Dungeness crab lasagna with pine nuts or the ravioli, made from a Peirano family recipe passed down for over a century. Pizza lovers will appreciate the options cooked in a real wood-fired oven, while gourmets won't want to miss the handmade artisanal charcuterie.

After a hearty dinner, head to the iconic Refire Bar located in the back room. Here, you can not only order a cocktail or craft beer but also play a game of billiards on the legendary table where the founder himself was often seen. The bar's atmosphere is perfect for socializing, with regular happy hours and broadcasts of major sporting events.

As the cafe is a favorite gathering spot for Willamette Valley winemakers, the wine list deserves special attention. You can sample rare Oregon varietals that perfectly complement the Italian flavors. If you're lucky, you might catch one of the jazz nights that fill the space with live music and create a unique vibe.

Getting There

This legendary establishment is located in the heart of the historic center at 521 NE 3rd St, McMinnville. This area is considered one of the most picturesque in the city thanks to its abundance of boutiques and tasting rooms. If you are already walking along Third Street, you will easily find the entrance to the cafe by its recognizable sign.

Travelers heading here from Portland will need about an hour's drive via Highway 99W or I-5. Free street parking is available around the restaurant. You can also use a taxi or rent a car for a more comfortable exploration of the Willamette Valley wineries.

For those who prefer public transportation, there are Yamhill County Transit bus routes connecting the city with neighboring towns. The nearest major airport, Portland International (PDX), is about a 50-minute drive away, making the cafe accessible to tourists arriving in Oregon.

History & Facts

The history of Nick's Italian Café began in 1977 when Nick Peirano, a third-generation descendant of Italian immigrants, decided to open a restaurant without any prior business experience. In those years, McMinnville was a quiet farming town, and the local wine industry was just taking its first steps. Nick brought fine Italian cuisine inspired by family traditions to the region.

One of the first items on the menu was ravioli made from a family recipe that was already 120 years old at the time. Over time, the restaurant turned into an unofficial club for local winemakers, playing a key role in establishing the region's culinary culture. In 2014, the establishment received one of the most prestigious honors in the culinary world—the James Beard Foundation Award in the "America's Classics" category.

After 46 successful years under the Peirano family's management, the cafe closed in 2023, which was a great loss for the community. However, in 2025, it found a second life as Nick's Italian Café 2.0. The new owners have carefully preserved the classic recipes, and many historical artifacts and photographs from the old interior have been donated to the local heritage museum as part of the city's cultural code.
