The caverns owe their name to a unique limestone bridge approximately 18 meters (60 feet) high, which formed naturally at the entrance as a result of a sinkhole collapse. This majestic natural bridge is an iconic attraction in its own right and serves as the hallmark of the entire complex.

Descending underground, visitors enter an extensive network of chambers and passages decorated with countless stalactites, stalagmites, and other whimsical karst formations. A constant temperature of around 21°C and high humidity are maintained inside the caves, creating a special microclimate that supports the growth and preservation of these geological treasures. A tour of Natural Bridge Caverns is an unforgettable journey deep into the planet, revealing its hidden beauty.

History & Facts

The history of Natural Bridge Caverns doesn't go back centuries but begins relatively recently, telling a story of curiosity and perseverance. They were discovered on March 27, 1960, by four students from St. Mary's University in San Antonio: Orion Knox, Al Brandt, Preston Knodell, and Joe Cantu. After obtaining permission from ranch owner Clara Wuest, they set out on their fourth expedition to the area beneath the famous 60-foot limestone bridge.

During their exploration, the group noticed a draft of cool air coming from a debris-filled crawlway—a sure sign of underground voids. Being the smallest in the group, Orion Knox was the first to venture through the narrow opening. To their amazement, miles of untouched cavern passages opened up beyond it, decorated with magnificent crystal formations that no human had ever seen before.

Realizing the significance of the find, the students informed the Wuest family, who made the bold decision to invest all their resources into developing the caverns for tourism. One of the discoverers, Orion Knox, even took a two-year break from his studies to help with the development. Their efforts were successful, and on July 3, 1964, Natural Bridge Caverns officially opened to the public. Shortly after, the Governor of Texas called it a "Jewel in the crown of Texas attractions," and in 1971, it was designated a National Natural Landmark of the USA.

Time Needed

When planning a visit to Natural Bridge Caverns, you should aim for a duration of anywhere from one hour to half a day, depending on which activities interest you. If your goal is only the main cavern tour, such as the popular Discovery Tour, you will need about 60–75 minutes. This is enough time to walk leisurely through the illuminated chambers, admire the majestic geological formations, and learn the history of this underground world's discovery from a guide.

For a more immersive experience in this natural park, it is recommended to set aside 2 to 4 hours. This will allow you not only to go underground (perhaps even visiting both the Discovery and Hidden Wonders tours) but also to enjoy surface activities. For example, completing the Twisted Trails ropes course can take about 45 minutes. Adding time for the zip line, gemstone mining, or exploring the maze, you can easily turn your visit into a fun adventure lasting several hours.

Working Hours

Natural Bridge Caverns is open to visitors year-round, making it accessible for a visit in any season. As a rule, the complex operates daily, with standard hours for tours such as the Discovery Tour and Hidden Wonders Tour usually being from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The park grounds themselves, including the parking lot and picnic areas, are open slightly longer, from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. It is important to remember that schedules can change depending on the season, weather conditions, and special events, so it is always helpful to check for up-to-date information before your trip.

To avoid misunderstandings and plan your visit in the best way possible, it is highly recommended to check the exact opening hours and tour schedules on the official caverns website immediately before your trip. During peak seasons, such as holidays or summer vacations, it is recommended to book tickets in advance online. This will not only help save time by eliminating the wait in line but also guarantee your spot on a tour, as the number of participants may be limited.
