How to get to Vail

Vail is a prestigious, world-class ski resort nestled comfortably among the peaks of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, USA. Many travellers also choose to fly into the international airport of Denver (DEN), located approximately 190–200 km from Vail, as it offers a wider flight map. Alternatively, you can consider the airport in the city of Aspen (ASE), situated 63 km away, which is particularly convenient if you are planning a tour of several Colorado resorts.

There is no direct railway service to the city of Vail, as the complex mountain terrain does not allow tracks to be laid directly to the resort. Travelling exclusively by train to the destination is not possible, and tourists will need to combine different modes of transport.

Railway enthusiasts can take a train to a major transport hub — the city of Denver. From there, the remaining part of the journey to the mountains will need to be covered by a rental car or intercity bus, while enjoying the landscapes of the Rocky Mountains.

Travelling by car offers complete freedom of movement and the opportunity to stop at picturesque viewpoints. The drive from the city of Denver will take about 1 hour and 40 minutes (155 km) along a highway passing through impressive mountain landscapes.

If you are heading from the direction of Aspen, the 163 km journey will take approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes. In winter, it is critically important to ensure that your vehicle is prepared for challenging weather conditions and driving on snowy roads.

When planning a visit to Vail, it is important to remember that you are travelling to a high-altitude region with a specific climate. Following simple recommendations will make your holiday safe and maximally comfortable.

1. Clothing and Equipment. Weather in the mountains changes rapidly. Use the layering principle: thermal base layers, fleece, and a windproof jacket are mandatory in winter, and even in summer, evenings can be cool.
