Joymongers Winston-Salem

About

In the heart of the historic West End district of Winston-Salem, you'll find a unique spot for craft culture enthusiasts — Joymongers Barrel Hall. This establishment stands out among other breweries in the USA due to its niche specialization: it is entirely dedicated to creating and serving beer aged in fresh bourbon and wine barrels.

The building housing the bar is an attraction in itself. It is a restored 1920s garage built in the Spanish Colonial style. Inside, a spacious 6,000-square-foot taproom awaits visitors, where the industrial past harmoniously blends with modern comfort and a welcoming atmosphere.

What to Do

The main reason to visit this place is the incredible drink menu. Visitors are offered a choice of more than 17 varieties of beer, including classic IPAs, lagers, and stouts. However, the true "stars" of the menu are the innovative barrel-aged varieties that can only be sampled here.

The bar's space is thought out to the smallest detail: you can settle in at the impressive 50-foot bar or at tables handcrafted by local artisans. During the day, a quiet family atmosphere prevails, and as evening falls, the atmosphere becomes more dynamic and avant-garde. The hall regularly hosts trivia nights and performances by talented musicians from the Triad region.

As for the food, the establishment actively collaborates with neighboring restaurants and invites popular food trucks. This allows guests to enjoy a variety of food — from classic burgers and hot dogs to gourmet bowls — right while tasting their drinks.

Getting There

Finding the establishment is quite simple: it is located in the historic West End district at 480 West End Boulevard, right across from the picturesque Hanes Park. This location is one of the most accessible points in the western part of the city.

For those who prefer to travel by car, parking is provided. Thanks to a partnership agreement, bar visitors can use the parking lot of the neighboring restaurant, which significantly eases the search for a spot in this popular area. From the city center, the bar can also be quickly reached by taxi or ridesharing services.

If you enjoy walking, the West End district is perfect for it. Its historic architecture and cozy streets invite you to walk to the bar while enjoying the old-city atmosphere. As for public transport, it is recommended to check current city bus routes passing through this block in advance.

History & Facts

The story of Joymongers Brewing began in 2016 in Greensboro. The success of the first location prompted the founders to expand, and their choice fell on Winston-Salem, where they saw a unique combination of an industrial past and a vibrant cultural present. The process of transforming an old 1920s garage into a modern brewery began in October 2017.

During the reconstruction, the 6,000-square-foot building retained its magnificent Spanish Colonial style. Craftsmen carefully restored the architectural details, adding modern skylights and massive garage doors that open on warm days, merging the interior space with the street. This allowed the historic property to be brought back to life, filling it with new meaning.

Interestingly, Joymongers Winston-Salem adheres to a business model rare for the state: they operate on a 100% retail basis. You won't find their products in cans at supermarkets or in wholesale shipments. The beer produced here can be tasted exclusively within the walls of this establishment, making every visit a truly unique experience.

Time Needed

To fully appreciate the skill of the local brewers and feel the atmosphere of the historic building, a typical visitor will need about 2–3 hours. This time is quite sufficient for a leisurely tasting of several varieties and a snack.

If your visit coincides with a music night or a trivia event, you can easily spend the entire evening here. The establishment is conducive to long conversations in large groups, and the cozy interiors allow you to relax and forget about the time.
