Its journey began in 1937, when the French colonial administration built a small airfield here. Initially, it consisted of a dirt runway and was used for both military and civil purposes to serve the region.

A key and most dramatic stage in the airport's history was the Vietnam War period. Due to its strategic location, the airfield was turned into an important airbase for the North Vietnamese Air Force.
