What to Do

The main reason to visit the bridge is for the breathtaking panoramic views. From a height of 128 meters, you get a stunning overlook of Victoria Falls and the churning waters of the Zambezi. It is a perfect spot for photographers looking to capture the rainbows that frequently hang in the air due to the fine mist.

For adrenaline seekers, the bridge offers extreme activities, including bridge swings and bungee jumping. A freefall against the backdrop of one of the world's most powerful waterfalls guarantees unforgettable emotions and a powerful rush of endorphins.

Those who prefer a more relaxed pace will enjoy a simple walk across the pedestrian path. Here, you can feel the slight vibration of the structure beneath your feet when a vintage train passes and observe the bustle of the border crossing, feeling as though you are standing at the intersection of two nations.

Getting There

Reaching this majestic structure is quite simple. The bridge is located on Livingstone Way, just 350 meters south of the waterfall itself. If you are staying in the center of Victoria Falls, you can walk to the site while enjoying a stroll along the scenic paths leading to the border.

For travelers arriving from further away, a taxi is the most convenient option. The ride from Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) to the bridge takes about 20–30 minutes. Many hotels also offer organized transfers for their guests to the national park entrance, which is just a stone's throw from the bridge.

History & Facts

The bridge's history is inextricably linked to the ambitious project of British businessman Cecil Rhodes. He dreamed of a railway that would connect Cape Town and Cairo. Rhodes insisted that the bridge be built in the exact spot where the spray from the great waterfall could mist the passing trains, although he passed away two years before work actually began.

The construction of this engineering masterpiece was incredibly rapid, taking only 14 months between 1904 and 1905. All steel components of the structure were manufactured in the UK by the Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company, then shipped to Mozambique and transported to the Zambezi River by rail.

The project was led by distinguished engineers George Andrew Hobson and Ralph Freeman. The bridge became a symbol of technical progress in the early 20th century, taking the form of an elegant parabolic arch that still looks impressive and reliable today, more than a century later.

Time Needed

Typically, regular tourists need about 1 to 2 hours to explore this attraction. This is plenty of time for a leisurely stroll across the pedestrian zone, taking panoramic photos of the waterfall, and watching the trains and cars cross the border between the two countries.

If you plan to do more than just sightsee—such as participating in adrenaline activities like bungee jumping or taking a special bridge tour—you should set aside at least half a day for your visit. Also, consider the time needed for border formalities if you plan to cross the bridge entirely to enter neighboring Zambia.

Working Hours

The Victoria Falls Bridge is open to visitors daily, though the schedule varies slightly depending on the day of the week. Most of the time, it is open from early morning until late evening, allowing tourists to enjoy the views at both sunrise and under the evening lights.
