The airline's fleet is considered one of the most modern in the region and includes advanced airliners such as the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and Boeing 777-300ER. These aircraft allow for comfortable travel across vast oceanic distances, offering passengers innovative solutions like the Economy Skycouch transformer seats, which turn a row of seats into a full-fledged sleeping area.

Air New Zealand is also actively developing regional aviation, using reliable ATR 72 and Dash 8 Q300 turboprop aircraft to connect 27 cities within the country. Thanks to well-thought-out logistics and a focus on environmental sustainability, the company strives to minimize its impact on the environment while maintaining a leading position in the aviation market.

Baggage

Baggage allowances at Air New Zealand depend on the selected fare, class of service, and flight route. The airline applies different rules for domestic flights within New Zealand and international destinations, so passengers are strongly advised to check the data specified on their ticket before heading to the airport.

For carry-on baggage, Economy and Premium Economy passengers can typically take 1 piece weighing up to 7 kg, plus a small personal item (a laptop bag or a handbag). For Business Class, the allowance increases to 2 pieces of carry-on baggage. The dimensions of the bags must allow them to be placed in the overhead bins or under the seat in front.

Checked baggage also varies: basic Economy fares on some routes may not include baggage (seat only fare), while standard Economy includes 1 piece up to 23 kg. In premium service classes such as Business Premier, allowances may be 2 or 3 pieces. Fees apply for overweight or additional bags, which are more cost-effective to pay in advance via the Air NZ website or mobile app.

The transport of special baggage, including sports equipment (skis, surfboards, bicycles) and musical instruments, is carried out according to special rules. Most such items can be transported within the free baggage allowance if they meet weight restrictions; however, an additional fee may be required for oversized items. The list of prohibited items traditionally includes dangerous substances, flammable liquids, and high-power lithium batteries.

Pet Rules

In-Cabin Transport

  • On regular Air New Zealand flights, the transport of pets (cats and dogs) directly in the passenger cabin is prohibited.
  • An exception is made only for officially registered service animals (guide and assistance dogs) that help passengers with disabilities. Such animals are transported free of charge with all supporting documentation.

Transport in the Baggage Compartment

  • Pets travel as special cargo or checked baggage in a heated baggage compartment.
  • Container requirements: the carrier must comply with IATA standards, be durable, have secure locks, and provide adequate ventilation. The animal must be able to stand, turn, and lie down freely.
  • The maximum weight of the animal together with the crate must not exceed the limits set by the airline for the specific aircraft type.

Required Documents and Cost

  • A veterinary passport with records of current vaccinations, a microchip, and a veterinary certificate are required for the flight. For international flights, the quarantine requirements of the destination country must be taken into account.
  • The cost of transportation is calculated separately and depends on the weight of the animal with the container and the distance of the route. It is recommended to check current rates through the contact center as they are updated regularly.

Before planning your trip, be sure to contact the airline to confirm the possibility of transporting an animal on a specific flight, especially regarding brachycephalic breeds (pugs, bulldogs), for which seasonal restrictions may apply due to health risks at high temperatures.

Services

Air New Zealand offers a high level of service focused on passenger comfort depending on the chosen class of service. In Economy class on international flights, ergonomic seats and access to a modern entertainment system are provided. A special feature of the airline is the Economy Skycouch option—three seats that turn into a flat surface for relaxation, which is ideal for couples and families with children.

For those looking for more space, Premium Economy is available with increased legroom and an improved menu. The highest level of comfort is provided by Business Premier, where seats fold out into a full flat bed over two meters long, and passengers are offered haute cuisine prepared from fresh New Zealand products and fine wines.

The onboard entertainment system includes a huge selection of movies, TV series, music, and games. Onboard Wi-Fi is available on many long-haul Boeing 777 and 787-9 aircraft, allowing you to stay connected even over the ocean. For young travelers, special children's kits and menus are provided, and for passengers requiring special meals (vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.), pre-ordering is available no later than 24 hours before departure.

Special services also include accompaniment for unaccompanied minors traveling without parents and assistance for passengers with reduced mobility. The airline recommends checking the cabin configuration of your chosen flight in the Onboard experience section of the official website in advance to make the most of all available amenities.

Destinations

The Air New Zealand route network covers key destinations in the Pacific region, Asia, North America, and Australia. With a well-developed flight structure, the carrier provides a reliable link between the islands and the world's largest centers, with the main hub and coordination of all flights carried out at Auckland International Airport.

Within the country, the airline operates regular flights connecting cities such as the capital Wellington, the business hub Christchurch, and the popular tourist center Queenstown. Flights are also operated to regional centers, including the cities of Nelson, Napier, Tauranga, and Palmerston North, making travel across New Zealand as fast and convenient as possible.

Booking Tips

To get the most favorable fares on Air New Zealand flights, it is recommended to book tickets several months before departure, especially if your trip falls during school holidays or public holidays in New Zealand. The best prices are usually available on the official website airnewzealand.co.nz, where exclusive offers and promotions for loyalty program members are also frequently published.

Using the Air NZ mobile app significantly simplifies the travel process. In the app, you can not only buy a ticket but also complete online check-in, which opens 24 hours before the flight. Early check-in allows you to choose the most comfortable seats in the cabin and avoid queues at the airport. Additionally, the app makes it convenient to pay for extra baggage, which is cheaper than at the check-in counter.

When choosing a fare, pay attention to the refund and change conditions: basic Economy fares are often non-refundable. If flexibility is important to you, it is worth considering Flexi group fares. Also, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which will cover unexpected expenses in case of flight delays or lost baggage. If your city is not represented in the direct search, try searching for flights through major hubs like Auckland to build an optimal route.

History

The history of Air New Zealand dates back to 1940 when Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL) was founded, starting seaplane flights between New Zealand and Australia. A landmark milestone was 1965—that was when the government fully bought out the company and renamed it Air New Zealand, marking the beginning of a new era for the international carrier under a national brand.

Over the following decades, the company actively expanded its geography, opening routes to Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and London. An important stage of development was the merger with the domestic airline National Airways Corporation (NAC) in 1978, which allowed for the creation of a single powerful network combining domestic and international flights. Being based in Auckland contributed to the city's transformation into the region's main aviation hub.

Joining the Star Alliance in 1999 strengthened the carrier's position in the global market, giving passengers access to an extensive network of partners. The evolution of the fleet has gone from turboprop machines to modern jet liners: the company was the launch customer for the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, confirming its status as a technological leader.

Today, Air New Zealand not only provides transportation for millions of passengers annually but also actively implements sustainable development programs, striving to reduce its carbon footprint. Innovations in interior design, such as the famous Skycouch seats, and continuous improvement of onboard service allow the airline to maintain its title as one of the best air carriers in the world, staying true to the traditions of New Zealand hospitality.
