The airline's fleet is being actively modernized and consists primarily of modern Airbus aircraft. For short and medium-haul routes, A319, A320, and A321 aircraft are used, while passengers on long-haul flights are welcomed by wide-body A330 and innovative A350 vessels. This not only increases comfort levels but also reduces environmental impact.

Attention to detail is evident in everything: from exquisite in-flight dining inspired by Italian cuisine to a flexible fare system. The airline strives to become a symbol of modern Italy in the sky, blending innovation with centuries-old cultural traditions.

Baggage

Baggage allowance at ITA AIRWAYS depends directly on the selected fare, class of service, and specific route. Passengers are advised to check the exact terms of their ticket during the booking process or in their personal account on the airline's official website.

Carry-on baggage: For most standard fares, one piece of carry-on baggage weighing up to 8 kg is permitted. The maximum dimensions are 55 × 35 × 25 cm. Additionally, one personal item (a small bag, backpack, or laptop) can be brought into the cabin and must fit freely under the seat in front of you.

Checked baggage: Free allowances depend on the class. Premium Economy and Business Class usually include 1 to 2 pieces of luggage weighing 23–32 kg each. In Economy Class, the allowance can vary from no baggage (Light fare) to one piece weighing 23 kg. Additional fees apply for exceeding weight or piece limits according to current rates.

Special baggage: The airline allows the transport of sports equipment (skis, bicycles, golf equipment) and musical instruments. This service requires advance booking and payment. Dangerous items, such as flammable substances or high-power lithium batteries, are strictly prohibited from transport.

Pet Rules

Pet Transportation in the Cabin

ITA AIRWAYS permits the carriage of small pets (cats and dogs) in the aircraft cabin subject to the following conditions:

  • The animal must be in a special soft-sided carrier with dimensions that allow it to be placed under the seat in front.
  • The maximum weight of the pet including the carrier usually should not exceed 8-10 kg (exact limits depend on the aircraft type).
  • The pet must remain inside the container throughout the entire flight.

Transportation in the Cargo Hold

If the pet and its crate exceed the weight limit for the cabin, it will be transported in a heated cargo compartment:

  • The container must comply with IATA standards, be durable, waterproof, and provide sufficient ventilation.
  • The size of the crate must allow the animal to stand at full height, turn around, and lie in a natural position.
  • On some types of aircraft, the transportation of large animals may be restricted.

Required Documents and Fees

To travel with a pet, you must prepare a veterinary passport, certificates for vaccinations and microchipping, and comply with the requirements of the destination country. This service is paid, and the cost depends on the route and method of transportation. It is recommended to request permission to transport an animal at least 48 hours before departure, as the number of pet slots per flight is limited.

Loyalty Program

Volare Loyalty Program

Volare is a modern loyalty program for frequent flyers of ITA AIRWAYS, designed with maximum flexibility and service personalization in mind. Participation in the program allows you to earn points for every flight and use them to pay for future travel.

Thanks to membership in the SkyTeam alliance, earning and redeeming miles is possible on flights of many international partner airlines. Registration in the program is free and available on the airline's official website.

Services

ITA AIRWAYS positions itself as a premium network carrier, offering passengers three main classes of service. Economy Class provides a comfortable flight with a basic set of services, including free snacks and drinks on international flights. For those who value space, Premium Economy is available, featuring increased legroom and an enhanced menu.

Business Class on the airline's flights is a benchmark of Italian style and comfort. On long-haul routes, passengers are offered seats that convert into full beds, exquisite Italian dishes from renowned chefs, and access to exclusive wines. Priority service at airports and access to VIP lounges make the journey as peaceful and productive as possible.

On-board amenities include modern entertainment systems with individual screens on wide-body aircraft, where a wide selection of movies, music, and games is available. Many aircraft offer an on-board Wi-Fi service, allowing you to stay connected. Special attention is given to passengers with children and people with disabilities: special meals (vegetarian, children's, dietary) can be ordered in advance, and an escort service can be requested by contacting specialassistance@ita-airways.com.

Destinations

The flight geography of ITA AIRWAYS covers the most important cities in Europe, North and South America, as well as Mediterranean countries. The airline's main hub, through which key international and domestic routes pass, is Rome. A convenient schedule allows travelers to easily reach cultural and business centers such as Milan, Naples, and Catania from the capital.

The international network includes regular flights to Munich and Frankfurt am Main, providing reliable connections with Germany. The airline is constantly expanding its destination map, offering tourists the opportunity to discover both popular resorts, such as Alghero in Sardinia, and major global metropolises.

Booking Tips

To purchase ITA AIRWAYS tickets at the most favorable price, it is recommended to plan your trip in advance. The best deals are usually available several months before departure, especially for popular destinations like Milan or resorts in Sicily. It is easiest to track promotions and sales through the airline's official newsletter or the mobile app.

Online check-in opens 48 hours before departure for most flights (24 hours for flights to the USA). Completing the procedure online via the website or app saves time at the airport and allows you to choose the most comfortable seat in the cabin. Please note that selecting certain seats in priority zones may involve a fee, depending on your fare conditions.

When booking, carefully study the fare package rules: the cheapest Light category tickets usually do not allow for refunds or free checked baggage. For Volare program members, there is a "Use VOLARE points" option, allowing you to partially pay for the ticket with accumulated points directly during the checkout stage. Also, don't forget to arrange travel insurance, which will provide additional peace of mind during your trip.

History

The history of ITA AIRWAYS began in 2020 when the government of Italy decided to create a new national carrier, Italia Trasporto Aereo S.p.A. The company was designed to replace Alitalia, which had ceased operations, becoming a more compact, efficient, and financially sustainable player in the aviation market. Legally, the airline began its operations on October 15, 2021.

From the very beginning of its journey, the airline focused on a modern image and premium quality. Rome (Fiumicino) Airport and Milan (Linate) city airport were chosen as the main hubs. A major milestone in its development was joining the SkyTeam alliance in October 2021, which allowed the brand to quickly integrate into the global air transport system.

The company's fleet was formed with a focus on sustainability and efficiency, based on new-generation Airbus aircraft. In 2022, the carrier introduced its unique livery—the sky-blue Azzurro color, which symbolizes athletic achievements and the unity of the Italian nation. This helped the brand become recognizable in all major airports worldwide, including Frankfurt am Main and Munich.

In 2023, a new chapter opened in the company's history: an agreement with the Lufthansa Group to acquire a stake in the capital, outlining a path toward a strategic partnership with one of Europe's largest aviation holdings. Today, the airline continues to expand its route network to North and South America, remaining the primary ambassador of Italian style and culture for millions of travelers.
