Baggage

Baggage rules at SAS are flexible and depend on the selected fare type. For carry-on baggage, standard norms usually allow a bag up to 55x40x23 cm weighing up to 8 kg, as well as a small personal item (handbag or laptop) that must fit under the seat in front of you. Passengers in higher service classes are often entitled to two pieces of carry-on baggage.

Checked baggage allowances vary: in the SAS Go Light fare, baggage is typically not included, while SAS Go allows one piece weighing up to 23 kg. For SAS Plus and SAS Business passengers, limits are expanded to two or three pieces of baggage, respectively. The maximum weight of a single suitcase must not exceed 32 kg for the health and safety of airport staff.

If your baggage exceeds the established weight or size limits, an excess baggage fee is charged. It is most cost-effective to pay for extra baggage in advance via the mobile app or the airline's website, as airport rates are significantly higher. Loyalty program members may enjoy privileges such as a free extra bag.

Transporting special items, such as ski equipment, bicycles, or musical instruments, requires prior notification to the airline. Strollers and car seats for those traveling with infants are usually carried free of charge. For safety reasons, it is prohibited to carry explosives, flammable liquids, and dangerous chemicals. Before packing, it is recommended to ensure that all batteries and power banks are in your carry-on baggage.

Pet Rules

In-Cabin Transport

SAS allows the transport of small cats and dogs in the passenger cabin on most flights. The animal must be in a special carrier bag or container with maximum dimensions of 40x25x23 cm. The total weight of the pet including the carrier must not exceed 8 kg. Throughout the flight, the animal must remain inside the closed container placed under the seat in front of you.

Transport in the Cargo Hold

If a pet is larger than the established cabin limits, it can travel in the heated and ventilated cargo hold. The container must comply with international IATA standards, be sturdy, waterproof, and allow the animal to stand at full height and turn around. Maximum weight restrictions depend on the aircraft type, so such transports require mandatory confirmation from the airline.

Required Documents and Fees

  • Veterinary passport: With records of all valid vaccinations, including rabies.
  • Microchip: Mandatory for international travel.
  • Certificates: Specific requirements of the destination country (quarantine certificates, etc.).
  • Payment: Transport fees are fixed and depend on whether the pet is flying in the cabin or the cargo hold.

Important Restrictions

There are restrictions on transporting brachycephalic breeds (flat-faced dogs and cats), as they are sensitive to pressure and temperature changes. Seasonal bans on transporting animals in the cargo hold may also apply during periods of extreme heat or cold. It is recommended to book a space for your pet no later than 24 hours before departure, as the number of animals on a single flight is strictly limited.

Services

SAS offers three main classes of service tailored to the needs of different categories of travelers. SAS Go is the classic economy class, including tea and coffee on board, as well as access to the entertainment system. For those who value comfort and flexibility, there is SAS Plus (premium economy), offering wider seats, in-flight meals, access to business lounges, and expedited pre-flight formalities.

For the most discerning passengers on long-haul flights, SAS Business is available. This features full lie-flat seats, an exclusive menu of Scandinavian cuisine, an extensive wine list, and individual high-resolution monitors. The company's modern fleet is actively equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, allowing you to stay connected even over the ocean, while seat pitch in all classes is designed according to European comfort standards.

SAS pays special attention to young passengers and their parents. The airline provides special children's kits, the option to order a children's menu, and the use of bassinets for infants on long flights. For travelers with disabilities, a full range of assistance services is offered—from registration to boarding the aircraft. The airline also provides an unaccompanied minor service, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the entire journey.

Destinations

The SAS route network covers almost the entire globe, focusing on providing connections between Northern European countries and the world's largest metropolises. The main link is the international hub in Copenhagen, which serves as a key gateway for travel throughout Scandinavia and beyond.

The airline operates regular flights to major Swedish cities such as Stockholm and the island city of Visby, as well as providing dense connectivity with Norway, including Oslo, picturesque Bergen, and northern destinations such as Tromsø. Thanks to a well-thought-out schedule, tourists can easily plan both business trips and journeys to the fjords or to see the Northern Lights.

Booking Tips

To purchase SAS tickets at the most favorable prices, it is recommended to plan your booking at least 2–3 months before the trip. The best deals are usually available on the official website flysas.com in the "Low Price Calendar" section, where you can visually compare flight costs for different dates. Traditionally, the cheapest days for departure are Tuesday and Wednesday, while Sunday flights are in high demand.

Online check-in at SAS opens 22 hours before departure. We recommend checking in as early as possible to access free seat selection (depending on the fare) and avoid queues at the airport. The airline's mobile app significantly simplifies this process, allowing you to store electronic boarding passes and receive real-time notifications about flight status changes.

When choosing a seat, consider that noise from the engines is usually lower in the front part of the cabin. For those who need more legroom, paid seats in emergency exit rows are available. Don't forget about travel insurance: SAS offers insurance options during booking that can cover expenses for trip cancellations or baggage delays, which is particularly important for complex connecting routes.

History

The history of SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) began in 1946 when the three national carriers of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden decided to join forces to create a powerful transatlantic airline. This unique interstate partnership was the first of its kind and allowed Scandinavia to take a prominent place in the rapidly developing global aviation of the post-war era.

One of the most brilliant pages in the company's history was the development of transpolar routes. In 1954, SAS became the first airline in the world to operate a regular flight from Europe to Los Angeles via the North Pole. This achievement significantly reduced travel time between continents and established the carrier's status as an innovator and pioneer in high-latitude navigation.

In the following decades, the company actively expanded its network, launching flights to Asia and South America, and constantly updated its fleet. In 1997, SAS co-founded Star Alliance, the largest aviation alliance in the world, which gave its passengers access to thousands of destinations across the planet. Mergers and strategic partnerships helped the company strengthen its position amidst fierce competition in the European market.

The modern stage of SAS development is linked to technological transformation and a focus on the environment. The airline was one of the first to start testing synthetic fuel and set an ambitious goal to reduce its carbon footprint. Today, SAS is not just a transport company, but a symbol of Scandinavian unity and progress, continuing to connect the Nordic countries with the world through its key hubs in Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo.
