Wizz Air flights and airline information

About

Wizz Air is the largest Hungarian low-cost carrier, having become one of the leaders in budget air travel across Central and Eastern Europe. The airline was founded in 2003 and has since significantly expanded its presence, covering routes not only to European countries but also to destinations in the Middle East and North Africa. The carrier's main hub is Budapest.

The carrier follows a low-cost model, allowing passengers to save significantly on flights by paying only for the services they need. Wizz Air operates a modern fleet consisting exclusively of narrow-body Airbus aircraft. The airline is not a member of global aviation alliances, preferring to develop its own network of subsidiaries in various regions.

Key features of Wizz Air include a high frequency of flights on popular tourist routes and affordable fares that often start at minimal amounts. Passengers can flexibly customize their flight by choosing between the basic fare and extended service packages. The airline regularly receives high ratings for punctuality and its innovative approach to service through digital channels.

An efficient operational model allows the airline to maintain one of the youngest aircraft fleets in the industry. The use of modern Airbus A320neo and A321neo models not only increases passenger comfort by reducing cabin noise but also helps minimize environmental impact through fuel efficiency.

  • Hotline phone — +36 1 777 9300 (international number)
  • Customer support email — info@wizzair.com
  • Social media — the company's accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (X), and YouTube
  • Mobile app — available for download in the Google Play and App Store
  • Emergency support — in case of flight delays or lost baggage, it is recommended to visit the airport desks or use the online form in your personal account

Please note that the airline uses a network of local paid numbers for different countries. It is recommended to always check the current contact information in the "Contact Us" section of the official website before calling.

Baggage

Baggage allowances at Wizz Air depend directly on your chosen fare package. The basic ticket price always includes only one piece of carry-on baggage (up to 40x30x20 cm), which must fit freely under the seat in front of you. To carry larger bags in the cabin, you must purchase the WIZZ Priority service, which allows you to bring an additional trolley bag weighing up to 10 kg.

Checked baggage is not included in the minimum fare and is paid for separately. The airline offers several weight categories for baggage: 10 kg, 20 kg, or 32 kg. Passengers can pay for up to six pieces of baggage per person. It is recommended to add baggage online via the website or mobile app, as airport fees are significantly higher.

In the event of exceeding weight limits, a fee is charged for each kilogram of excess baggage. The maximum allowable weight for a single piece of baggage is 32 kg. Sports equipment and musical instruments are transported at special rates and require prior notification to the airline during booking.

Prohibited items include any dangerous substances, flammable liquids, and sharp objects in carry-on baggage. For the convenience of passengers with children, Wizz Air allows the free transport of one stroller or a folding cot. To avoid unnecessary hassle at the airport, weigh your baggage in advance and check that it matches the dimensions specified on your ticket.

Pet Rules

Cabin and Hold Transportation

Wizz Air rules regarding pets are quite strict: the airline does not allow the transport of pets (dogs and cats) either in the aircraft cabin or in the cargo hold on most of its flights.

Guide and Assistance Dogs

  • The only exception is guide dogs (assistance dogs) accompanying passengers with disabilities.
  • Transportation of a guide dog is free of charge and is only possible with the appropriate certificates.
  • The owner must notify the airline of the flight with an assistance dog at least 48 hours before departure.

Required Documents and Requirements

  • A valid international veterinary passport is required for the guide dog.
  • Vaccination certificates and a microchip are mandatory.
  • The animal must stay at the owner's feet throughout the flight and cannot occupy a separate seat.

Given the strict restrictions, Wizz Air does not provide services for transporting animals as registered cargo. Passengers are recommended to contact the airline in advance to clarify the rules for a specific route, as destination country requirements may impose additional restrictions on the import of animals even in the case of guide dogs.

Loyalty Program

Wizz Discount Club

Wizz Air does not have a classic mileage accumulation system; however, for frequent flyers, there is a paid membership program called Wizz Discount Club. This program focuses on providing instant discounts on tickets and services instead of long-term point accumulation.

Membership Levels and Privileges

  • Standard Membership — suitable for those traveling as a pair. Discounts apply to the cardholder and one companion.
  • Group Membership — the ideal option for families and groups of friends. Privileges apply to the holder and up to five companions.
  • Key Benefits: guaranteed discount on airfares (usually from 10 USD) and a discount on paying for checked baggage online.

How It Works

Unlike traditional programs, you don't need to accumulate miles for flights here. Members pay an annual fee and get access to exclusive fares. Discounts are applied automatically when booking on the official website or in the app if the user is logged into their profile.

Partner Offers and Joining

You can join the club directly during the ticket purchase process. The program pays for itself after just one or two family trips. Additionally, the airline occasionally partners with banks to issue co-branded cards that allow you to receive additional bonuses to your WIZZ account to pay for future flights.

Services

As a classic low-cost carrier, Wizz Air offers a standardized service focusing on the basic needs of travelers. The company's aircraft feature one class of service — Economy. The cabins of the Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft have a dense seating layout, which helps maintain low ticket prices. However, passengers can purchase seats with Extra Legroom, located in the front rows or near emergency exits.

The airline operates the Wizz Café concept on board. Meals and drinks are not included in the ticket price but can be purchased during the flight from the onboard menu. The assortment includes sandwiches, snacks, hot and cold drinks, as well as alcohol. There are no built-in entertainment systems (monitors) or Wi-Fi on the planes, so it is recommended to download content to personal devices in advance.

For passengers with special needs, Wizz Air provides a range of special services. This includes unaccompanied minor services (on a limited number of flights), assistance for passengers with reduced mobility, and free transportation of medical equipment. For travelers with children, priority boarding is available, allowing them to settle into the cabin before the main flow of passengers begins.

Destinations

The Wizz Air route network covers hundreds of cities in Europe, Asia, and Africa, offering convenient and budget-friendly connections between regions. The main link and primary hub of the airline is Budapest, from where flights are operated to the most popular destinations.

Passengers can plan trips to major European capitals such as London, Paris, Berlin, or Rome. For beach holiday enthusiasts, routes to Barcelona, Larnaca, and Malaga are open. The carrier is also actively developing eastern routes, connecting Europe with cities such as Istanbul and Tel Aviv.

Booking Tips

To purchase Wizz Air tickets at the best prices, it is recommended to plan your trip in advance — 2-3 months before departure. The cheapest fares are usually available for midweek flights, while weekend and holiday flights cost significantly more. To track promotions and sales, it's worth subscribing to the airline's newsletter or joining the Wizz Discount Club, where members get access to special prices.

The most important rule for passengers is mandatory online check-in. It opens 24 hours before the flight (or 30 days if you have paid for a seat selection) and closes 3 hours before departure. Checking in directly at the airport is a paid service and costs substantially more than the flight itself, so always save your boarding pass on your mobile device or print it out in advance.

When choosing a seat, keep in mind that with the basic fare, the system assigns it automatically. If it is important for you to sit next to a companion or if you prefer window seats, it is better to pay for seat selection at the booking stage. It is also recommended to arrange travel insurance in advance to cover possible expenses in case of unforeseen plan changes or medical situations during the trip.

Using the Wizz Air mobile app significantly simplifies booking management. In it, you can not only buy tickets but also add baggage, change the departure date, and track flight status in real time. Sometimes exclusive offers and discounts not available on the company's main website appear in the app.

History

The history of Wizz Air began in September 2003, when a group of experts led by József Váradi decided to create an ambitious new low-cost airline in Central Europe. Just seven months after its founding, in May 2004, the carrier's first aircraft flew from Katowice. The company's main base became Budapest, which allowed the Hungarian carrier to quickly fill the vacant niche for budget travel in the region.

In its first years of operation, the airline demonstrated rapid growth, constantly expanding its flight geography and opening new operational bases in Poland, Romania, and other Eastern European countries. A landmark milestone was the expansion of the route network beyond the continent — Wizz Air began operating flights to Tel Aviv, Dubai, and cities in North Africa. In 2015, the company successfully listed on the London Stock Exchange, confirming its status as a major player in the aviation market.

The evolution of the Wizz Air fleet has always been linked to Airbus aircraft. Starting with classic A320 models, the company gradually transitioned to more spacious and modern Airbus A321s. Today, the core of the fleet consists of innovative Neo series vessels, which allow the airline to maintain its status as one of the greenest carriers in Europe due to low carbon emissions.

In recent years, Wizz Air has transformed into a powerful international holding company, which includes subsidiaries in the UK, Abu Dhabi, and Malta. This has allowed the airline to further strengthen its position in the global market. Despite its massive expansion, Wizz Air remains true to its original mission — making air travel accessible to everyone through technological innovation and an efficient business model.
