The castle owes its current magnificence to a large-scale reconstruction that began in 1892 on the ruins of a medieval fortress. The project was carried out by the famous Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, also known for his work on Amsterdam Central Station and the Rijksmuseum. The restoration was made possible by the marriage of Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nyevelt van de Haar to Baroness Hélène de Rothschild, who funded this ambitious project.
De Haar Castle is famous not only for its impressive architecture but also for its luxurious interiors. Inside is a rich collection of art, antiques, period furniture, and tableware, much of which was specially designed by Cuypers himself. The entire ensemble, including the chapel and the magnificent park with its gardens and ponds surrounding the castle, is a single work of art where every detail is carefully considered.
