General Weather Overview

The climate of Derby can be described as hot semi-arid with a distinct tropical influence. An eternal summer reigns here: temperatures remain high throughout the year, and even during the "coldest" months, the thermometer confidently stays above +28°C during the day. Weather conditions here are quite stable and predictable, which facilitates travel planning.

The year is roughly divided into two main periods: the dry season and the season of high humidity. From May to October, rainfall is practically non-existent, the sky remains clear, and the heat becomes more moderate and comfortable for visitors. This is the ideal time for outdoor activities and excursions, as the air becomes drier and the nights bring welcome coolness.

The second period, lasting from November to April, is characterized by higher temperatures, reaching an average of +30...+31°C. During this time, the number of cloudy and rainy days increases noticeably, especially in January and February. Although the total volume of precipitation may be small, the frequency of rain increases, creating a more humid atmosphere compared to the arid middle of the year.

Temperature

The climate in the city of Derby is distinguished by high temperatures throughout the year. There is practically no cold weather here, so travellers should prepare for warm, and often hot, weather regardless of the season.

The hottest period falls at the end of the year and the beginning of the next. In December and January, the average temperature holds at 30–31°C, while daytime highs often reach 33–35°C. Nights at this time are also very warm, around 27°C. January and February are characterized by the highest number of rainy days (up to 13 days per month), although the total amount of rainfall remains moderate.

The most comfortable time for a visit is considered to be from June to August. During these months, the heat subsides: the average temperature drops to a pleasant 23–25°C, and at night the air freshens to 18–19°C. This is the driest season when rain is almost completely absent, creating ideal conditions for sightseeing.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Derby is distributed unevenly, forming a distinct seasonality. The wettest period falls at the beginning of the year: January leads in the frequency of precipitation, counting on average about 13 rainy days. In February and March, it rains less often, approximately 9–10 days per month; however, the total volume of falling moisture remains small, suggesting short-term showers rather than heavy downpours.

The second half of the year, conversely, is distinguished by exceptional dryness. From June to October, precipitation ceases almost completely. In July, August, and October, meteorological statistics often record a complete absence of rainy days, and rainfall levels stay at the zero mark. This time of year is excellent for travellers who want to be guaranteed to avoid rain.

Transitional periods, such as April, May, and November, are characterized by low precipitation activity — from 2 to 4 wet days per month. By December, the frequency of rain increases again, heralding the onset of the next wet season.

What to Pack

When packing for a trip to Derby, primarily consider the hot climate: high temperatures persist here almost all year round. The basis of your luggage should be light, loose-fitting items made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. T-shirts, shorts, and summer dresses will be suitable for any month. Given the aggressive Australian sun, be sure to pack a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and cream with a high protection factor (SPF 50+).

If your trip falls during the period from November to March, be prepared for the wet season. The number of rainy days, especially in January and February, increases noticeably, so a light raincoat or a compact umbrella will be very useful. In the winter months (from June to August), rains are unlikely, and the days remain sunny and warm; however, night temperatures can drop to +18°C. For evening walks at this time of year, it is recommended to take a light cardigan, windbreaker, or denim jacket to feel comfortable after sunset. Do not forget comfortable walking shoes and open sandals.
