Located in the picturesque district of South Hobart, this site is not just a museum, but a profound monument to human resilience. The Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is one of the most significant locations in Australia, dedicated to the lives of female convicts whose stories were inextricably linked to the continent's colonial past.

A former house of correction operating from 1828 to 1856, it is now inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. This site, which once held approximately 7,000 women and saw more than 2,000 children born within its stone walls, still echoes the past. The complex spans the site of a former distillery and includes preserved yards, outlines of cells, laundries, and hospital wings.
The modern interpretation center invites guests to explore the stories of not only colonial-era women but also the Palawa people. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by the voices of women speaking about the land’s connection to its traditional owners, making the visit an emotionally rich and multifaceted experience for every traveler.
