About

Located in the picturesque district of South Hobart, this site is not just a museum, but a profound monument to human resilience. A former house of correction operating from 1828 to 1856, it is now inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. This site, which once held approximately 7,000 women and saw more than 2,000 children born within its stone walls, still echoes the past. The complex spans the site of a former distillery and includes preserved yards, outlines of cells, laundries, and hospital wings.

The modern interpretation center invites guests to explore the stories of not only colonial-era women but also the Palawa people. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by the voices of women speaking about the land’s connection to its traditional owners, making the visit an emotionally rich and multifaceted experience for every traveler.

What to Do

A visit to the complex offers guests a deep immersion into the 19th-century atmosphere through interaction with historical spaces. The primary way to explore the site is a self-guided walk with an audio guide, which allows you to explore the grounds at your own pace while listening to audio stories where the sounds of bells and daily life create a striking sense of presence.

For a more detailed look at the history, it is highly recommended to book one of the organized tours. Particularly popular is “Her Story” — a dramatic theatrical performance where costumed actors bring the harsh daily life of the factory to life. Also available are the Heritage Tour, which provides a detailed historical overview of the architecture, and the Convict Women’s History tour, focusing on the lives of specific female prisoners.

In the interpretation center, you can explore interactive galleries revealing details of the class system, punishments, and the labor performed by the women. This site is ideal for those who value educational tourism and want to learn more about Australia's social history by seeing the remains of old cells and laundry yards where life once bustled.

Getting There

The site is located in South Hobart at 16 Degraves St. If you are staying in the city center, a pleasant walk to the complex will take about 20–30 minutes. The route is slightly uphill, offering views of the suburb's historic architecture.

For those who prefer public transport, buses run regularly from the city center to South Hobart. A taxi or Uber ride will take only 5–10 minutes. The site is also conveniently located for travelers with a rental car, with the drive from Hobart Airport taking approximately 30 minutes.

There are parking spaces available near the historic site, though they can fill up during peak hours. A great option is to combine your visit with a walk from the famous Cascade Brewery, which is located nearby, allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere of this green and peaceful neighborhood.

History & Facts

The history of this site did not begin as a prison. In 1823, entrepreneur Thomas Yardley Lowes purchased the land to build a distillery; however, the business venture was unsuccessful. In 1827, the colonial government purchased the building and repurposed it into a female house of correction, which received its first inmates in December 1828.

Life at the factory was governed by a strict hierarchy: prisoners were divided into three classes based on their behavior and the nature of their crimes. The first class was entitled to lighter work and better prospects for release, while the third class was subjected to the harshest punishments and heavy physical labor in the laundries. Living conditions were made difficult by swampy soil and high humidity, which, combined with overcrowding (at times housing up to 1,000 people instead of the intended 100), led to high mortality rates.

After the transportation of female convicts ceased in 1853, the complex was used for various purposes: it served as a boys' reformatory, a mental hospital, and even a maternity hospital. In the early 20th century, many buildings were demolished, and it was only through public efforts in the 1970s that restoration of this unique monument began. In 2010, the complex was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Australian Convict Sites.

Time Needed

A basic introduction to the site and viewing the exhibitions in the interpretation center usually takes 1 to 2 hours. This is sufficient time to walk through the yards with an audio guide and read the main information panels.

If you plan to attend one of the specialized tours, such as the “Her Story” dramatized performance or a detailed historical tour, we recommend allowing at least 3 hours for your visit. Immersing yourself in the personal stories of the inmates requires time and a reflective mindset to fully process the experience.

Working Hours

The complex is open to the public daily, making it easy to include in your Tasmania travel itinerary. Standard opening hours are from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Sunday.

Please note that the ticket office closes 30 minutes before the site closes, and the last organized tours usually begin an hour before closing. It is recommended to arrive in the morning to ensure you have enough time to see all the exhibits without rushing.
