What to Do

The main reason to visit the zoo is to observe its inhabitants. Here you can find a variety of birds, small mammals, and reptiles. A walk past the enclosures allows you to see the animals in conditions as close as possible to their natural habitat and learn more about the biological diversity that Brazil is so famous for.

In addition to observing the fauna, visitors have access to all the facilities of the adjacent Getúlio Vargas Park. You can stroll through shady alleys, enjoy the view of the picturesque lake, or organize a family picnic on the specially designated lawns. For those who enjoy an active lifestyle, there are sports grounds, and children will surely appreciate the play areas.

The zoo is also an excellent spot for photography — the calm animals and abundant vegetation provide a beautiful backdrop for photos. Many people come here for the relaxing atmosphere, simply to sit on a bench in the shade of the trees and watch park life unfold in the subtropical climate.

Getting There

The municipal zoo is located within Getúlio Vargas Park in the Marechal Rondon district. Thanks to its convenient location in the Porto Alegre metropolitan area, it is easy to reach by both private and public transport.

If you are coming from the city center, a taxi or ride-sharing app trip will take no more than 10–15 minutes. For those who prefer public transport, bus routes serving the Rua Dona Rafaela stop are suitable. You can also take a suburban train to Canoas station, from where the park entrance is about a 20–30 minute walk or a short local bus ride away.

Parking is available for those traveling by car. The park is integrated into the urban environment, so GPS navigation will lead you straight to the main gates at R. Dona Rafaela, 700.

History & Facts

While the municipal zoo itself is a modern part of the city's recreational system, the history of the land it sits on dates back centuries. During the pre-colonial period, the area of modern-day Canoas was inhabited by the indigenous Tapes people, and the first European settlements began to appear here in the early 18th century.

Interestingly, the name of the city, Canoas, is linked to the construction of the railway in the 1870s. During the project, workers used large wooden canoes carved from tree trunks, which gave the future municipality its name. The railway station, opened in 1874, transformed the agricultural region into an important transport and industrial hub.

Getúlio Vargas Park, where the zoo is located, is often called “Capão do Corvo” by locals. This name remains as a memory of the region's natural landscapes before active urbanization began. Today, the zoo serves as a living reminder of the importance of preserving biodiversity in a fast-growing city that gained independent municipal status in 1939.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the animal enclosures and meet the inhabitants of the mini-zoo, 1–1.5 hours is usually sufficient. This is plenty of time to walk around the entire area and take memorable photos.

However, considering the zoo is located inside the large Getúlio Vargas Park, many visitors prefer to stay for half a day. If you plan to walk by the lake, have a small picnic on the grass, or use the sports grounds, set aside at least 3 hours for your visit. It is an ideal place for those who want to take a break from the city noise without traveling far from the center.

Working Hours

When planning your visit, please note that the zoo is closed on Mondays for maintenance work and for the animals to rest.

On all other days, from Tuesday to Sunday, the "Minizoo" doors are open to visitors from 10:00 to 16:00. It is recommended to come in the morning when the animals are most active and the park atmosphere is most conducive to peaceful walks.
