About

The Timbaubas Municipal Natural Park is the true "green lungs" of the city of Juazeiro do Norte. Located in the state of Ceará, this protected site in Brazil covers over 634 hectares and serves as a vital ecological shield, preserving the riparian forests along the Salgadinho and Timbaubas rivers.

The park's main treasure is the picturesque Monkeys' Lagoon (Lagoa dos Macacos). It is not only a beautiful spot for contemplative relaxation but also a vital resource: the city receives up to 75% of its drinking water from here. The park is classified as a full nature protection unit, making it a unique place for environmental education and walks away from the city noise.

After a major renovation, the area has transformed into a modern recreation zone where wild nature meets comfortable infrastructure. It carefully protects 11 natural springs and unique local flora, creating conditions for maintaining biodiversity amidst active urbanization.

What to Do

Visitors to the park can enjoy a variety of leisure activities. Walking along the well-maintained trails is one of the most popular pastimes: the routes lead to the Monkeys' Lagoon, offering views of lush riparian vegetation along the way. The paths here are mixed-use, including paved sections for jogging and shaded trails for thoughtful nature observation.

For fans of an active lifestyle, there is an excellent sports base: the park has football fields, beach volleyball courts, and a hardcourt volleyball court. Families often choose this spot for picnics in cozy kiosks, and children can play outdoors in a safe environment.

Special attention should be paid to the meliponary—a unique place where stingless bees are kept. Educational lectures and excursions dedicated to ecology are often held here. If you're lucky, you might catch a cultural event or public lecture at the open-air amphitheater, which makes a visit to the park even more rewarding.

Getting There

Reaching this natural corner from the city center is quite simple. A trip by taxi or rented car will only take about 10–15 minutes. The main landmark is the address in the Lagoa Seca district, and paved roads provide comfortable access directly to the parking lot at the entrance.

If you prefer public transport, you can use buses going to the Lagoa Seca quarter. Local residents from nearby areas often come here on foot, as the park is harmoniously integrated into the urban environment. For precise navigation, it is recommended to use mobile apps, following the official coordinates of the site.

History & Facts

The history of this green reserve began on March 23, 1995, when it was officially declared a riparian vegetation conservation zone by municipal decree. The creation of the park was an important step in protecting the ecosystem of the Timbaubas stream and the Monkeys' Lagoon from the effects of rapid urban development.

A significant stage in the site's life was a major renovation carried out between September 2003 and May 2004. As part of the restoration project, more than 3,000 seedlings of local plants were planted. This not only brought life back to the natural area but also allowed for the creation of modern infrastructure: an amphitheater, sports fields, and convenient pedestrian bridges.

Today, the park continues to develop, gaining recognition at the municipal level for its contribution to the region's sustainable development. Ongoing work is being done to clean the water bodies and protect the fauna, and the park itself has received honorary environmental awards. The administration's plans include further expansion of the facilities for environmental protection and educational programs.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the nature and see the park's main sights, a typical visitor will need 2 to 4 hours. This is enough time for a leisurely stroll along the trails to the Monkeys' Lagoon and a short rest in the shade of the trees.

If your plans include active recreation on the sports fields, participating in ecological tours, or a family picnic in one of the kiosks, it's worth setting aside half a day for the visit. The park is ideal for spending a morning or the pre-sunset hours here, when the heat subsides.

Working Hours

One of the main features of this place is its accessibility. Timbaubas Municipal Natural Park is open to visitors around the clock, 24 hours a day.

This schedule applies daily, from Monday to Sunday, allowing you to plan your visit for an early morning jog or an evening stroll at any time that suits you.
