Founded in 1997 as part of the University of Contestado (UNC), the center combines the functions of a serious research institute and the public "Earth and Life" Museum. Spread across approximately 600 m², the extensive exhibition covers an incredible period of history—from the first bacteria that appeared a billion years ago to the flora and fauna of the Cenozoic era. The museum is divided into themed halls, including the Hall of the Universe and galleries dedicated to the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras.

The significance of CENPALEO is hard to overstate: its collections house over 12,000 specimens, making it the largest paleontological repository in the state of Santa Catarina. Visitors can see extremely rare finds, including meteorites, dinosaur skeletons, and unique conodonts found right here in the vicinity of Mafra, which are recognized as some of the best-preserved in the world.

What to Do

The main activity at CENPALEO is immersing yourself in the history of the planet's evolution by touring the permanent exhibition. Visitors can trace the entire path of life, from the formation of the Earth to the appearance of modern primates. Be sure to visit the Hall of the Paleozoic, which features the famous mesosaurs—ancient aquatic reptiles. One of the most amazing objects is a massive stone block containing the remains of 23 mesosaurs at once.

Geology enthusiasts will be interested in the collections of minerals and meteorites, as well as sedimentary rock samples. You will learn how, hundreds of millions of years ago, a giant lagoon existed on the site of present-day Mafra, creating ideal conditions for the preservation of ancient organisms. The exhibition includes not only fossils of fish and plants but also impressive reconstructions of dinosaur and pterosaur skeletons.

The center actively popularizes science, so interactive classes and educational programs are often held here. If you are planning a group visit, it is worth booking a guided tour: the center's specialists speak with passion about their latest discoveries and annual expeditions to Antarctica, demonstrating the connection between distant continents through the lens of ancient finds.

Getting There

The paleontological center is located at Av. Pres. Nereu Ramos, 1071, directly on the campus of the University of Contestado (UNC) in the Jardim do Moinho district. Finding building Bloco E is easy by following the university's directional signs.

If you are coming from the city center of Mafra, it is most convenient to take a taxi or a private car along Nereu Ramos Avenue. For those who prefer public transport, buses run to central stops, from where the campus is within walking distance or a short taxi ride away. Parking is available on the university grounds for visitors arriving by car.

History & Facts

The history of CENPALEO began in 1997, when the University of Contestado initiated the creation of a center to study and protect the rich paleontological heritage of the states of Santa Catarina and Paraná. The first museum exhibition opened to the public on September 25, 1998, and since then, the collection has grown continuously, becoming the largest collection of fossils in the region.

Over the years, the center has become an important link in global science. Since 2015, CENPALEO researchers have been active participants in the Brazilian Antarctic Program, conducting expeditions to the South Shetland Islands. This research allows scientists to draw parallels between the prehistoric ecosystems of South America and Antarctica, confirming their ancient connection as part of the supercontinent Gondwana.

By its 25th anniversary in 2023, the museum had significantly expanded. Today, it houses more than 12,000 cataloged specimens. One of the center's main scientific prides are the finds from the shales of the Lontras Formation in Mafra, which are approximately 300 million years old. Among them are some of the most perfect conodont specimens in the world, whose preservation allows for detailed study of the evolution of the first vertebrates.

Time Needed

To explore all the themed halls at a leisurely pace and get acquainted with the main exhibits, a typical visitor will need between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. This is enough time to travel from the birth of the universe to the present day, carefully studying unique fossils of mesosaurs and dinosaurs.

If you decide to use the services of a guide or have a deep interest in paleontology, plan for about 3 hours for your visit. Detailed stories about scientific expeditions to Antarctica and the specifics of sedimentary rock formation in the Mafra region make the visit much more immersive and informative.

Working Hours

The CENPALEO Paleontological Center is typically open to visitors on weekdays with a lunch break: from 08:30 to 11:30 and from 13:30 to 16:30. On Saturdays, the museum operates on a shorter schedule from 09:00 to 12:00, and Sundays are closed.

Since operating hours may change depending on the university calendar or special events, it is highly recommended to check the information on the center's official website or confirm the current schedule by phone before your trip.
