What to Do

The main reason to visit Klondike Rib & Salmon is, of course, the tasting of Northern delicacies. Be sure to try their signature Rib & Salmon Combo or the bison shepherd's pie. Don't forget to order the traditional bannock bread and save some room for their signature pudding. Keep in mind that the portions here are quite generous, making many dishes ideal for sharing with a group.

While waiting for your order, be sure to explore the unique decor. The walls and even the ceiling of the restaurant are adorned with many curious and interesting items: from antique tools to historical artifacts reminiscent of the Gold Rush era. The restaurant also features a gift shop where you can purchase unique items made by local artisans, such as antler jewelry or branded merchandise.

Remember that the restaurant does not accept reservations, so it's a good idea to arrive early. Waiting in line and chatting with the friendly staff in the spirit of Yukon hospitality is all part of the experience. And if it's chilly outside, it's best to bring a sweater: the historic buildings retain an authentic coolness, which only adds to the atmosphere of your evening.

Getting There

Finding Klondike Rib & Salmon is quite easy — it is located at 2116 2nd Avenue, in the very heart of the city, on the famous "Klondike Corner." This spot is within walking distance of most downtown hotels and key tourist locations, making it the perfect place to wrap up a city stroll.

If you are traveling by car, keep in mind that parking in this area is on-street and spaces are limited, especially during the evening peak hours. Alternatively, you can use a local taxi or public transit — city buses run regularly along 2nd Avenue, stopping near the restaurant.

For those who prefer active recreation, the restaurant is easily accessible by bicycle during the summer months. Thanks to its central location, Klondike Rib & Salmon serves as an excellent landmark for tourists exploring the capital of the Yukon.

History & Facts

The history of the buildings that today serve up juicy salmon dates back to the Gold Rush era. The dining section of the restaurant originally opened around 1900 as MacMillan’s Bakery. In those days, it was a simple tent frame that eventually evolved into a permanent city building, witnessing the rapid growth of the settlement.

In 1929, the property took on a new life under the name Klondike Airways. Despite the ambitious name, the owners never actually purchased a plane; however, they successfully delivered about 110,000 pounds of mail to Dawson City annually using snowmobiles and tracked vehicles. Later, in the 1930s, the site housed a carpentry shop where furniture and even caskets for the local funeral home were made.

The modern chapter began under the leadership of Donna Novekosky, who managed the restaurant for 21 years, turning it into a true legend. After a brief closure in 2023, the establishment reopened its doors in the summer of 2024 under new ownership. They have carefully preserved the classic menu and historical decor so that the building, which has stood for over 120 years, can continue to delight guests with its unique atmosphere.

Time Needed

For a full visit to Klondike Rib & Salmon, you should budget between 1.5 and 2 hours in your schedule. Since the restaurant is extremely popular and does not take reservations, you might spend about 20–30 minutes waiting for a table in the "first-come, first-served" line, especially during the height of the tourist season.

Enjoying dinner itself, exploring the numerous historical artifacts in the interior, and picking out souvenirs in the gift shop will take another hour or so. If you are only planning a quick snack, you could finish in an hour, but rushing through such an atmospheric place would hardly allow you to fully experience the spirit of the Klondike.

Working Hours

The restaurant operates on a split schedule for lunch and dinner. From Monday to Friday, the doors are open from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. On Sunday, the establishment welcomes guests for the evening shift only — from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Saturday is the restaurant's day off.

It is important to note that Klondike Rib & Salmon is a seasonal restaurant (typically open from May to September). Due to the historical nature of the buildings and the lack of modern insulation, operating during the winter months is not possible. Exact opening and closing dates for the season depend on the weather, so we recommend confirming the details on the website before your visit.
