Shopping in Xiaoyi is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a Chinese province and purchase goods that are hard to find in major tourist megacities. The city does not claim to be a high fashion capital, so you shouldn't look for flagship boutiques of global luxury brands here. However, Xiaoyi is famous for its high-quality local products, handicrafts, and democratic prices for everyday goods. For travelers, this is a chance to buy unique souvenirs with local flavor and see how modern trade is organized in a small Chinese city.
The center of commercial life is concentrated around the main city squares and central avenues. Here you will find Chinese brand clothing stores, jewelry showrooms, and electronics shops. Walking along these streets, you will find many small shops selling everything from tea and spices to modern clothing and shoes. In the evening, these areas are beautifully lit, attracting locals for promenades and shopping.
For more familiar and comfortable shopping, modern shopping centers operate in Xiaoyi. These are multi-story complexes where clothing stores, cosmetics, children's goods, and entertainment zones are gathered under one roof. Such malls feature popular Chinese mass-market brands, which are often not inferior in quality to Western counterparts but cost significantly less. Supermarkets are usually located on the ground floors, where you can buy groceries and local delicacies in factory packaging.
Local markets deserve special attention as they are an important part of the consumption culture. Food markets amaze with a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and spices. A lively atmosphere reigns here, and bargaining is common. Night markets open in the evening, selling small goods, accessories, and handicrafts alongside street food. These are the best places to feel the real rhythm of the city and communicate with the locals.
The choice of souvenirs in Xiaoyi is directly related to the cultural and agricultural characteristics of the region. Here is what's worth bringing back:
- Walnuts. Xiaoyi is called the "home of walnuts." Local varieties are distinguished by a thin shell and a buttery kernel. They are sold both by weight and in beautiful gift boxes. Shell crafts and walnut oil are also popular.
- Shadow theater attributes. Since the city is famous for this art, a shadow theater puppet or decorative figures cut from paper in the traditional style make an excellent gift.
- Shanxi Vinegar. The famous aged vinegar of Shanxi Province is the pride of the region. In stores, you can find bottles aged for several years, which are valued for their taste and health benefits.
- Fenjiu Alcohol. Although produced in the neighboring county, this drink is widely available in Xiaoyi and is a classic gift from a trip to China.
Shops in Xiaoyi usually open around 09:00–10:00 AM and work until 09:00–10:00 PM. Large supermarkets may close later. Regarding payment, cash is being used less and less here. Mobile payments via Alipay and WeChat Pay systems are the absolute standard. Even vendors at the market and in small kiosks have QR codes for payment. International bank cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted extremely rarely, only in the largest shopping centers or hotels, so be sure to set up an electronic wallet before your trip.
The Tax Free system (tax refund) generally does not operate in Xiaoyi. This service is mainly available at large international airports and special stores in megacities like Beijing or Shanghai. In small county-level cities, you should not count on VAT refund processing, so just enjoy the low prices without additional procedures.
