Putuo Mountain

About

Mount Putuo is one of the most spiritual and picturesque places China has to offer. This sacred island, part of the Zhoushan Archipelago, is officially recognized as one of the four sacred mountains of Buddhism in the country. The site is dedicated to the Bodhisattva Guanyin, known as the Goddess of Mercy, whose presence seems to be felt in every rustle of leaves and every strike of a temple bell.

The island represents a unique combination of natural splendor and architectural mastery. Here, golden sandy beaches harmoniously coexist with steep mountain slopes, while ancient temples are hidden in the shade of lush vegetation. The main pride of Putuoshan is the majestic South Sea Guanyin statue, which towers over the coast, welcoming pilgrims and travelers from all over the world.

Travelers are drawn here not only by its religious significance but also by the opportunity to escape the city bustle. Walking along the paths leading from one temple to another, you can encounter thousand-year-old trees, admire panoramic ocean views, and experience the true tranquility that this secluded place offers.

What to Do

The main activity on the island is visiting the magnificent temple complexes. Start with Puji Temple, the largest and most significant on the mountain, then head to the Fayu and Huiji temples. While pilgrims often climb to the summits on foot, a cable car is available for tourists, offering breathtaking views of the forested hills and the endless expanse of the ocean.

Nature lovers should definitely take a stroll along the famous beaches—"Hundred Step Beach" and "Thousand Step Beach." Scenic paths run between them, perfect for capturing panoramic photos. An interesting feature of the island is the preserved World War II bunkers hidden in the hills, which add historical depth to your route.

For a deeper immersion in the atmosphere, we recommend visiting the key shrines counter-clockwise—the route suggested by experienced travelers. Don't forget to stop by the majestic South Sea Guanyin statue, which serves as the visual and spiritual center of the island. Evenings here are ideal for meditation or simply quietly contemplating the sunset by the water.

Getting There

The main route to this sanctuary is through the port city of Zhoushan. From Shanghai, it is most convenient to travel by bus, departing from the South Bus Station or the Nanpu Bridge station approximately every 40 minutes. The bus will take you to the port of Zhujiajian, from where a 24-minute ferry ride will bring you directly to the island. Please note that there is an entrance fee to the island territory, which is approximately 140 yuan.

For those who prefer sea travel, there are direct ferries from Shanghai, though this journey takes significantly longer. Upon arrival on the island itself, navigation is very simple: shuttle buses run constantly between the key temples and beaches, with fares ranging from 5 to 10 yuan.

If your destination is Huiji Temple, located at the top of Foding Mountain, you can take the cable car, which saves significant time and effort. In any case, using maps and GPS coordinates will help you easily navigate the numerous trails and pavilions.

History & Facts

Mount Putuo, also known as Putuoshan, is one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism. For many centuries, it has been revered as the earthly abode of the Bodhisattva Guanyin. The area's peak as a religious center occurred during the reigns of the great dynasties, when massive temple complexes were built, which have now become architectural monuments.

The island's history is inextricably linked with legends of mercy. The island's main temple, Puji, is the central place of worship for Guanyin and preserves the spirit of ancient traditions within its walls. Other sanctuaries, such as the Fayu Temple, represent a unique blend of ancient ruins and carefully restored religious sites that have attracted pilgrims from across Asia for centuries.

In addition to man-made monuments, natural sites also hold historical value. For example, a thousand-year-old cinnamon tree grows on the island, considered a living witness to many historical events and spiritual practices that have taken place here over ten centuries.

Today, Putuoshan is not just an open-air museum but an active pilgrimage center. The tradition of climbing to temples on foot, and sometimes even on one's knees, continues today, emphasizing the deep historical and cultural continuity of this unique "island of the gods."

Time Needed

To fully experience the peaceful atmosphere of the island and see at least the main temple complexes, we recommend dedicating a full day to your visit. The journey usually begins early in the morning with a ferry arrival, allowing you to visit the main shrines in the first half of the day before it gets too hot or crowded.

If you want to not only see the sights but also enjoy relaxing on "Hundred Step" or "Thousand Step" beaches and climb to the top to Huiji Temple, the ideal option would be to stay on the island overnight. This will allow you to catch the sunset over the ocean and see the temples in the soft evening light when the crowds significantly thin out.

Working Hours

The island and its main shrines are open from 06:00 to 16:30. This allows tourists and pilgrims to arrive with the first rays of the sun and complete their tour before dusk.

Since individual temples and the cable car may have their own operating hours, and ferry schedules can change depending on the season and weather, visitors are strongly encouraged to check for current information on the official website or with carriers directly before their trip.

After visiting the holy sites and enjoying quiet walks along the coast, you can diversify your trip by visiting some interesting establishments nearby. Exploring the area around Mount Putuo will allow you to get acquainted with the modern gastronomic and entertainment culture of the region.
