General Weather Conditions

The climate in Leticia can be described as equatorial tropical, which is not surprising for a city located in the very heart of the Amazon jungle of Colombia. Eternal summer reigns here: the weather remains hot and humid throughout the year, without sharp seasonal temperature fluctuations. Average thermometer readings stay consistently around +26...+27°C, creating ideal conditions for the region's lush vegetation.

Instead of the usual change of seasons, there are wetter and relatively dry periods here, although rain is a frequent and expected phenomenon in any month. From December to May, precipitation falls almost daily (up to 30 days a month), saturating the rivers and forests with moisture. The period from July to September is considered slightly less rainy, when the number of "wet" days decreases, and daytime temperatures can reach their peak, hitting +31°C.

Travellers should be prepared for high humidity and consistent heat. Nights here bring only slight coolness, as the temperature rarely drops below +23°C. Thanks to this consistency, you can plan a trip at any time; the main thing is not to forget to take a reliable raincoat and light, breathable clothing.

Temperature

In the city of Leticia, an eternal summer reigns, typical of the Amazon region of Colombia. The temperature regime here is distinguished by enviable stability: throughout the year, average figures fluctuate within a very narrow range from 26.0°C to 27.8°C. Traditional concepts of winter and summer are practically erased here, so travellers should not expect sharp seasonal cooling or extreme weather changes.

Nevertheless, slight differences throughout the year can still be traced. The hottest month is usually September, when the average temperature reaches its maximum, and daytime figures can rise to 31.7°C. The conditional "cool" season falls in June and July: at this time, the average temperature drops to 26.0–26.1°C, which makes staying outdoors slightly more comfortable, although the sensation of tropical heat remains unchanged.

Daily temperature fluctuations in Leticia are moderate, which is typical for an equatorial climate. The difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum is usually about 6–7 degrees. After a hot day, when the air warms up to 29–30°C, a warm and pleasant night sets in with temperatures around 23–24°C. Such conditions are ideal for evening walks, as it is never cold here even in the darkest time of day.

Precipitation

The climate in Leticia is a classic example of the equatorial tropics, where precipitation is an integral part of the weather all year round. There is practically no pronounced dry season here, so travellers should be prepared for rain in any month. Precipitation falls exclusively in the form of rain, often in the form of warm tropical downpours, which can be short-term but intense.

The wettest period lasts from late autumn and covers the entire first half of the year. The rainiest months are December, January, March, and April. At this time, the number of days with precipitation reaches its peak: for example, in December it can rain almost daily (up to 30 days a month), and in January and March — about 28–29 days. High humidity during this period promotes the lush blooming of the Amazon jungles.

A relative decrease in precipitation is observed in the middle of the year, from June to September. The "driest" month can be called August, when the minimum amount of precipitation and the lowest number of rainy days are recorded — about 17. July is also relatively favourable for trips (about 19 rainy days). However, even during this period, rains remain a frequent phenomenon; they simply happen less often than in the winter and spring months.

What to Pack

Since Leticia is located in the heart of the Amazon, the climate here is hot and humid year-round with an average temperature of about 26–28°C. The basis of your wardrobe should consist of light items made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen, which dry quickly. Considering the tropical sun and the presence of insects, it is recommended to take not only T-shirts and shorts but also loose trousers and long-sleeved shirts in light colours, which will protect the skin from both mosquitoes and sunburn.

Precipitation in this region is a constant phenomenon: even in the relatively "dry" months (July and August), there are many rainy days, and from December to May, humidity is at its maximum. Be sure to put a high-quality raincoat or waterproof poncho in your suitcase, as an umbrella may be inconvenient during excursions through the jungle. Footwear should be closed, comfortable, and non-slip, for example, light trekking boots or sneakers that you don't mind getting dirty.

Don't forget important accessories for a comfortable trip around Colombia: a powerful insect repellent, sunscreen with a high SPF factor, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Since things dry for a long time due to high humidity, it is wise to take several changes of underwear and socks with you, as well as waterproof bags to protect technology and documents from moisture.
