How to get to Nosara

How to get there: Introduction

When planning a trip to Nosara, many travellers seek a way to escape the city bustle to this unique corner on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. It is not just a resort, but a true centre of attraction for lovers of yoga, surfing, and untouched nature, where the jungle meets the ocean. You can get here in various ways: by taking an exciting flight on a small plane, driving a car along scenic roads, or using local buses.

By Plane

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach the coast is by air. The local Nosara Beach (NOB) airport accepts domestic flights, allowing you to save significant time and enjoy stunning bird's-eye views of the tropical forests. This small airport is well connected to the country's main tourism hubs.

If direct tickets are unavailable, a convenient alternative is flying into the international airport in the city of Liberia (LIR), located approximately 77 km from the resort. Travellers also frequently plan routes through La Fortuna or Tambor, combining air travel with a subsequent journey by ground transport.

By Train

Railway connections in this part of Costa Rica are virtually non-existent, and there is no train station in Nosara itself. Trains are not a common mode of transport for intercity travel here, so tourists should not rely on this option when planning their itinerary.

Even the nearest major cities, such as Liberia or La Fortuna, do not have convenient railway links to the coast. To travel around the region, it is much more reliable and faster to use a car or bus.

By Bus

Travelling by bus is a budget-friendly way to get to Nosara, allowing you to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere, though it does require extra time. Routes connect the coast with the main cities of Costa Rica; however, direct services may be irregular, and transfers at larger transport hubs are often required.

Given the distance and the terrain, a bus journey can take significantly longer than travelling by car. It is recommended to check the schedule locally in advance, as it may change depending on the season, and be prepared for a long but scenic journey through provincial towns and green hills.

By Car

Travelling by car offers the freedom of movement and the opportunity to stop at the most beautiful places along the way. One of the most popular routes runs from the city of Liberia: the distance is about 123 km, and the travel time is approximately 2.7 hours. If you are driving from the La Fortuna area, prepare for a longer journey of 223 km (about 4.3 hours).

A route is also available from the city of Tambor, covering 243 km, which will take around 4.6 hours. It is worth noting that roads in the vicinity of Nosara can be unpaved and dusty, so renting an SUV (4x4) is often not just a recommendation, but a necessity for a comfortable trip.

Tips for Travellers

To ensure your stay in this tropical paradise is as comfortable and carefree as possible, it is worth noting a few local features in advance. Nosara is a place with a relaxed atmosphere and specific infrastructure, so proper preparation will make your holiday unforgettable.

  1. Clothing and Footwear. Prefer light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics. Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes and sandals that you don't mind getting dusty, as many roads here are unpaved.
  2. Transport. The best way to get around the local area is by renting an ATV (quad bike) or a golf cart. For longer trips, a four-wheel-drive vehicle (4x4) is strongly recommended.
  3. Finances. The official currency is the colón, but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. Cards work in hotels and large restaurants, but it is better to carry cash (small denominations) for small cafes and shops.
  4. Health and Safety. Use insect repellent, especially in the evening. Tap water is safe in most places, but tourists are often advised to drink bottled water. The area is considered calm and safe, but basic precautions are always wise.
  5. Communication. The official language is Spanish, however, due to the large number of expats and tourists, English is understood and used very widely here.
  6. Local Etiquette. The main motto of Costa Rica is "Pura Vida" (pure life). This means a relaxed attitude towards time and problems. Do not rush and be friendly.
  7. What to Avoid. Try not to drive a car after dark: roads are often unlit, and animals or unexpected potholes may be encountered.
  8. Extra Tip. Nosara is famous for its sunsets. Be sure to go out to Playa Guiones around 17:30 to watch the sun set into the ocean — this is the main local tradition.

By following these simple recommendations, you will be able to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of tranquillity and enjoy every moment of your journey.
