What to Do

The main reason to head up to the observatory is the chance to see the city in minute detail. Guests have access to powerful binoculars and interactive touchscreens. By choosing your preferred interface language, you can click on any object on the electronic map to instantly receive information about its significance and history.

A dedicated area in the center of the hall is set up for watching a documentary film. This short yet comprehensive film covers the key stages of the city's development, featuring rare archival photos and modern footage. It’s a great way to see how the capital's landscape has transformed over the decades.

In addition to digital technology, the museum features old engravings and photography exhibitions. This blend of real panoramic views and historical materials allows visitors to take a sort of virtual journey, weaving together the past and present of the city’s architectural identity into one complete picture.

Getting There

The museum and observatory are conveniently located in the very heart of the Old City. A key landmark is the busy pedestrianized Ledra Street — the tower is located directly above a well-known shopping center. Thanks to its height, the building is clearly visible from almost anywhere in the historic quarter.

If you plan to arrive by car, it is recommended to leave it at one of the municipal parking lots near the Venetian Walls, as most of the adjacent streets are pedestrianized. From the parking lot, it’s just a few minutes' pleasant stroll through the ancient quarters to the tower.

For those preferring public transport, buses heading to the central Eleftheria Square or the entrance to Ledra Street are ideal. From the stops, it is about a 200–300 meter walk. You can also take a taxi, asking the driver to drop you off at the start of the pedestrian zone.

History & Facts

The Shacolas Tower: Museum and Observatory opened its doors to the first visitors in 1998. Located on the 11th floor of what was then the tallest building in the historic center, it was the first facility of its kind to offer guests a high-tech perspective on the capital's architectural heritage.

The building is part of the legacy of the NKS Group, founded by well-known entrepreneur Nikos Shacolas in the mid-20th century. The museum project was conceived as a way to promote the region's history, combining a classic observation deck with modern educational tools.

Nicosia is considered one of the oldest cities in the world with a continuous history spanning over five millennia. Through archival footage and engravings, the museum's exhibition allows you to trace how the city's appearance has changed through the centuries, evolving from an ancient settlement into a modern capital that still retains its old-world charm.

For a long time, this platform was the only place to see a 360-degree panorama of the city. Today, it remains an important cultural landmark, helping guests better understand the topography and rich centuries-old history of Cyprus through visual imagery.

Time Needed

To leisurely take in all the panoramic views, use the interactive screens, and watch the documentary film about the city's history, visitors usually need between 1 and 2 hours.

This is plenty of time to compare the real view from the window with the information on the monitors and take some souvenir photos. If you plan to study the archival engravings and old photographs in the museum section in detail, you should aim for the upper end of this time range.
