What to Do

Inside the museum halls, visitors can embark on a fascinating journey through time. The main focus should be on exploring the personal belongings of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk: on display are his clothes, books, and accessories, which help to better understand the personality of the man who changed the face of Turkey. On the ground floor, be sure to explore the documentary exhibition dedicated to his reforms and visits to the southern regions.

The second floor of the mansion invites you into recreated living rooms. As you walk through them, you will see authentic period furniture and everyday objects that create a sense of the owners' presence. This is an excellent opportunity to appreciate the unique architecture and interior décor of a house that once served as a consul’s residence before hosting a national hero.

In addition to the main halls, guests are invited to visit the local library, which houses works on the history of the Republic. For those wishing to take home a memento of their visit, there is a gift shop at the museum, while the research center provides additional materials for those who are serious about historical science.

Getting There

The attraction is located in the heart of the city of Mersin at Atatürk Cd. No:34. Thanks to its central location, the museum is easily accessible for tourists who prefer walking through the busy streets or using public transport.

If you are in more remote areas, the most convenient option is to take a taxi from the city center. The trip from the main bus station or the seafront takes very little time. Additionally, municipal buses and dolmuses (shuttle taxis) run regularly toward Atatürk Street. Although a full metro line in the city is still in the development stage, the extensive surface transport network fully compensates for its absence.

For those traveling by private or rental car, parking options are available near the museum. A walk from Mersin's picturesque seafront to the mansion's doors takes about 15–20 minutes, allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere of the Mediterranean city before diving into history.

History & Facts

The history of this magnificent building began in 1897, when German consul H. Christman built the mansion in the city of Mersin. The house was intended for his wife, who came from the prominent local Mavromati family. Originally, this late 19th-century architectural masterpiece served as a consular residence and was a true gem of the neighborhood.

A landmark moment for the history of Turkey occurred in January 1925. It was then that the founder of the republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, stayed in the mansion for 11 days with his wife, Latife Hanım. The leader's stay gave this place a special status in the eyes of the townspeople. Later, the house was owned by the Tahinci family, which is why the building was known as the "Tahinci House" for a long time.

In 1980, the Turkish state purchased the historic building to preserve its cultural value for future generations. After extensive restoration, the modern Atatürk Museum-House opened its doors on October 12, 1992. Today, its collection includes many items transferred from the Anitkabir mausoleum in Ankara, making the exhibition as authentic and profound as possible.
