History & Facts

The majestic Sahabiye Madrasa was built in 1267 at the request of a prominent statesman — the Great Seljuk Vizier Fahreddin Ali, also known as Sahib Ata. It is in his honor that the building received its second name — Sahib Ata Madrasa.

An inscription on the walls indicates the completion date: 666 AH (1276 AD). At that time, the region was ruled by Sultan Kaykhusraw III, and the construction of such a significant educational center emphasized the city's status as an important cultural hub of the empire.

The building is considered one of the most striking examples of Seljuk architecture in modern-day Turkey. In the last century, it housed the Seljuk Museum, which kept rare artifacts. Today, the site's significance is recognized internationally: the madrasa is included in the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list.

Time Needed

A quick glance at the architecture and the building itself might take about 30 minutes, but a typical visit usually lasts from 1 to 2 hours. This is plenty of time to leisurely study the carvings on the portal and enjoy the atmosphere of the inner courtyard.

If you decide to linger at the local cafe with a traditional drink or browse the bookshops, time will fly by. A visit to the madrasa is easily combined with a walk to nearby attractions without needing a dedicated day.

Working Hours

The attraction is open to visitors daily from 08:00 to 20:30. This extended schedule allows tourists to see the complex both in bright daylight, which highlights the carving details, and in the soft evening twilight.

Since there are cafes and shops inside, operating hours may be adjusted slightly depending on the season or religious holidays. Before planning your visit, we recommend checking the official website or asking local guides for information.
